Learning to fish at spring river in Arkansas. In the morning I keep spotting very large fish slowly surfacing. Like 18″ or more.

I see a flat face and then the dorsal fin and slowly then a second dorsal fin and finally the tail fin. Emphasizing how slowly this fish breeches

    It’s a darker colored fish.

Sometimes it seems like a second one right behind it. And it often repeats in roughly the same spot. I am not 100% positive but seems like it is facing upstream mostly.

    Good evening to all-
Well, brother, there in the Spring River of north Arkansas I would be willing to bet that you’re seeing carp of some kind rolling. they do that sort of thing, and I can’t think of anything else that fits your description.
There are loads of trout in that flow, and even some quite good walleyes.
I’m betting on carp that you see.

you all be safe and keep well- Ed

Definitely snook. Or possibly a green sunfish.

I google carp and i think you are correct. They are described as bottom dwellers and jumpers though and those dont quite match up with what I am seeing (jumping sounds switfy and these seem so slow and lazy, but the face looks right).

Videos implies corn or balls of bread so will give that a shot and see if I can confirm

    Thanks Ed !

I would go with Gar. We have a place just south of Mountain Home AR and my parents live there now. Great location tremendous lakes and rivers. Within an hour of MH. Haven’t found any ice or large perch there yet So staying in CO for awhile more. although good eyes and warm water fish along with great river fly fishing below the dams.

Pretty sure it’s not gar although I do see a lot. Face is flat which I think is the funny mouth carp have. As opposed to the long skinny gar snout

Carp will school up and skim the surface for hours on end in some lakes and rivers. Not unusual behavior at all for them.
