My buddy caught this out of a small SE WI pond….and asked what it is. I guessed some sort of shad??? But didn’t know considering where it was caught.

Is it common for either of those to be in a small pond?

Looks like a golden shiner to me. Used to catch a lot of them that size out of a pond I lived near in west central Florida. I also got a 24.5” and a 25” largemouth out of that same pond. I wonder what they were eating…

Golden Shiner – decurved lateral line is diagnostic.

    Ya golden shiner.

Shad are found only in a few places.

I’m going to say Golden Shiner as well. They are common in some of the lakes and ponds in Central Minnesota. They can grow to a rather large size as well. I would love to toss a few of the bigger ones of those below a bobber in my Favorite lake in Canada. Then again the Canadian fisheries Dept. would not be real happy about that I’m sure.
