    Hello everyone,

Where I am based the ocean topography charts are woefull and I want to start mapping my own to find better ledges and reefs. I see that some fish finders can do this for you but I don’t really know anything about them. Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing or able to recommend the best setup / option?

    Thanks in advance!

Yes, most newer units will do this. I have done it with my Lowrance HDS Gen 3 unit a few times for when I was in canada and nothing was mapped. You will need a blank chip to store the data. At the time I believe I had to upload it to their website to have it converted so I could share it on other units, but I havent done it in like 5 years and memory fades. It might be simpler now.

I have a Humminbird that does it. I also bought the lines chart since the unit itself only holds so much info.

It’s as easy as can be, turn on autochart and let it run as you drive around. You can change the countour lines for a more accurate look if needed. The important part is that you make sure you turn the autochart feature off before powering the unit down. If you don’t it won’t save the info.
