How do you feel about using fish caught from public waters for Currency ?

Using fillets to exchange goods or services?

Or, Is it just a coincidence that when you give someone fish that they give you something in return?

At what point is it considered selling fillets.

One of the lakes that I fish has boat slips and I tend to request the dock that has some live aboards on that dock. A couple of fish usually gets me at least the perception of eyes and ears for security when I’m not down at the boat.

It’s when you stand to make a profit.

I give my MIL smoked salmon and frozen walleye. In return I get shampoo because she works at a beauty salon.

I think I’m in the clear.

I feel if a person isn’t willing to go fishing then they don’t deserve fresh fish. If they want to fish with me, great! Then they can clearly take their fillets with them. But if they won’t make time to go, then “No fish for you!” I won’t even gift fish to my immediate family.

IMO if I kept fish just to give them away it’s like stealing from the other anglers that actually want to go catch fish themselves. Granted if someone is handicapped then I would have no problem with it.

To answer the OP I think using fish as a currency is defiantly morally wrong. Also the DNR told me if I caught wind of gifting fish I should let him know about it. coffee

Why is that? Gifting fish is not illegal. Only would be illegal if you went out the same day and caught another limit.

I enjoy giving fresh fish to friends and neighbors once in a while. Not everybody that loves eating fish pursue them. The level of genuine appreciation says it all.

I’d imagine because most of the time people give away fish because they have too many. He said if no one is breaking the law then they shouldn’t mind me asking them some questions.

Since I don’t gift fish I don’t know the answer to this but does the person you are gifting fish to need a fishing license?

Same lake that I fish with boat slips, I stay a week and the fish limit is 3/day and 3 in possession. We release fish starting day one but it is inevitable that there is an occasional floater. Those fish early in the trip either get eaten by us for dinner or by a neighboring campsite that enjoys fish but aren’t fishermen. Our goal isn’t catching and keeping more fish but having 0 fish.

A HUGE THANK YOU GLENN! Those sunfish you gifted me were my mom’s last meal of fish. (although you or I didn’t know it at the time).

Since both my mother and my sister (from CO) love sunnies they both appreciated them much more then I could explain in words.

Thanks you for your generosity. waytogo

I don’t think this is a real problem. Unless we are talking about fish that come from gill nets. coffee

Why do I feel there is an underlying sturgeon light at the end of this thread tunnel.

A gift assumes no exchange, no profit.

Giving fish to Brian’s wonderful mother is not what I would consider an exchange or what I inquired about.

    Gift away.

What is considered profit in regards to trading fish is sort of the gray line I’m attempting to uncover.

No nhmm, no underlying sturgeon tunnel.
Just a broad question for any and all public managed game species. Can discuss steaks with 4 legs too if you want to broaden it though, but I’m not interested in focusing this on sturgeon.

    Tough topic Thursday eh

No, they don’t need a licence, but I believe your suppose to have a note saying who caught the fish, from what lake and the date they were caught.

I gift fish to a couple of widows and old men. And occasionally I party fish for/with people at a popular shore fishing spot to win some goodwill. If I help them get their limit of crappie they will leave and allow me to fish in peace. I rarely keep fish for myself. I like to catch as many fish as I can as many times as I can; Hopefully multiple years.

If we took everything exchanged for fish, deer, etc and stacked it all in one spot: soap and honey jars, etc…

How big would that pile be?

Doesn’t seem big when we think about our own lives and experiences. But combined, everyone. I dunno.
I suspect it might give a different perspective on the matter.

    Just tossing it out

No different than me giving away a package of venison sticks to someone who does not hunt. If it truely is a “gift” not a problem… now if you are giving away 20 sunfish filets a week and in return each time, you get a box of Cubans… that could raise some eyebrows.

I used to trade a guy fresh walleye fillets for venison tenderloin pound for pound. I’d be happy to do it again if anyone is interested.

I feel there is no grey matter on the subject that FBRM now narrowed down. Public land/waters equates to public game. We are allowed to harvest what is manageable for self-consumption, and that’s all.

Most public places in order to conduct business, permits need to get pulled, and for good reason too. Public resources do not belong to any individual, but as a whole. It’s no different than if someone went into a state forest and started chopping down trees for their sawmill.

The case of BK and his Mom would be the ideal case in which why the DNR has such a regulation. The DNR has it with the notion that people will use it with “good intentions”. If they are using, and abusing IMO, this “gifting” simply for self gain than they should be considered criminal.

Seriously, I give fish away all the time to people that love fish and don’t fish, as also to people that can’t fish but still like a meal if it, I don’t trade it and I don’t expect anything back, when they respond saying thank you do much is so rewarding in itself, and the best part is they never know when they will get some, I feel sorry for you that you think I’m stealing your fish only to give some away,it explains a lot why society is so screwed up, ugh, I can’t believe I even responded to something so anal

Not to take this back to Sturgeon but…I will.
In MN gifting of Lake Sturgeon is specifically listed as illegal.

Edit: I must have been sleeping. PARTY fishing for sturgeon is illegal.

    Go for it.

I’m talking about exchanging for goods and services. Your scenario sounds like gift.

Crap. How can I delete my above post? I sense a co might be after me.

    Seriously though. Profit.

For all of you that have gifted fish or game, have you EVER received a gift from that person? I’m certain the one receiving the gift feels obligated to gift something in return.

When two or more anglers are fishing and have beer in quantities [cans] more than 12X the number of anglers, then they’re party fishing.lol Party fishing is when two or more anglers collectively keep a limit or fewer of fish in total and all fish caught count towards their collective limit. Everyone just adds to the total number of fish until a limit for the total number of anglers is caught. In my boat each person has their own bucket or bag and if the limit is set at 10 fish as in crappies, nobody can have more than 9 in that pail. I love catching crappies but seldom keep more than five at a time and they’re eaten the same day. I don’t freeze much of any fish except lake trout or salmon and that’s just to keep it until we get back home from the cabin.

I gift 3-4 crappies at a time to a neighbor and his wife since neither one can get to or on the water to fish because of physical disability. I have another neighbor woman who’s about 90 that likes fish and I’ll occasionally give her a couple fillets.

In reality though, using fish for currency is already a happening thing. We very often see posts where someone or a party gets nailsed for grossly being over the limit. The CO takes the fillets and in exchange the idiots get to give the state some money to come and get the fillets. Its an odd exchange that I don’t quite understand but it must be effective because people keep on promoting it.

Got a buddy who has about an acre of asparagus, I’ll bring him a bag of fish and a jar of maple syrup and he lets me pick to my hearts content. I’ll eat, freeze, and make pickled asparagus for Bloody Mary’s. I then trade pickled asparagus for more maple syrup, then go get some deer sticks. Now I have fresh maple syrup for the pancakes and fixings for the bloody’s. The elderly neighbor lady also get 2 fillets breaded up when I’m doing a fish fry for the friends. We pool our bags of fish together and have a wonderful time, the neighbor lady is as happy as can be. You should see the stuff I can trade fresh morels for!
