What a week it was. I fished 5 days this past week and for the most part it was great walleye fishing. Monday started out with fishing weeds and finding excellent numbers of 15” to 16” fish with a 27” in the mix. Only fished 4 hours and had well over 20 walleyes. (off Tuesday). Wednesday and Thursday I had a client that has a place on the big lake and wanted to fish multiple spots. I had him last year also and he is a great guy to fish with. Over the 2 days we fished a total of 7 spots (areas) and boated 57 walleyes. Every spot we fished had active walleyes. Some spots had mostly slot fish and some spots had mostly keeper size fish. This client was not keeping fish the first day but on the second day we caught so many we each decided to keep a limit.
Now for Friday and Saturday the report is much different. On Thursday me and my guest finished off a great day on a spot that saw a dozen fish in just over an hour. This spot was hot. Well my Friday trip didn’t start till 1pm and of course I went to where I had left hot fish the afternoon before. Wow what a difference 20 hours makes. I fished it hard for 2 hours and only boated 2 walleyes. With only a couple hours left of the trip I made a move to another spot I had done well the day before but the bite had cooled and we only boated 6 more in 3 hours of fishing. With Friday being a blue bird day And Saturday’s weather looking to be interesting I had high hopes and I had the same clients from Friday. Well we had wind and clouds but the bite did not come back and we only boated 6 walleyes before getting blown and rained off the lake. We were caught in one down pour that was laughable.
As for presentation, the week started out with as good supply of spot tails and we jigged up a lot of walleyes early in the week on them. On Friday when I went to get bait the spot tails were gone and rumored not to come back. I used Goldie’s on Friday but I think the fish were just off. However tactics will change the next time out for me. We found fish in 9’ to 15ft thru the week. We have plucked walleyes out of weeds, rocks, sand flats(both on and off shore) and near breaks this past week. I expect fishing remain good thru June as it usually does with some days being better than others as of course but fish being had.
