First Time on Lake of Woods

    Hi Everyone,
My two sons and I will be staying at Wheelers Point resort on the Rainy River the last week of June. I have been studying the map of the area and we can fish either the Minnesota or Canadian side. It looks like the Canadian side is much more interesting with all the islands etc. Will have a good GPS so not worried about venturing out. Assuming good fishing on either side. Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you for your help.

I have only fished the US side of things. Plenty of fish to be caught. The Canadian side is definitely more scenic, but I think the majority of the folks going out of the Rainy River area are fishing the US side.
There are several resorts east of Bigsby Island that I think people are staying at if they are fishing that area of the Canadian side.

Will be interested in hearing what others have done.

Not sure what type of boat you’ll be running, but the trek up to the ‘islands’ is probably like 15+ miles to really get into them. Depending how far you are looking to go in there, it won’t be much different than boating from the north to south shore on Mille Lacs. Depending on the wind that could be a really rough ride. People absolutely make that run, but I’d have a backup plan ready cause I wouldn’t want to take a 15 mile boat ride if the wind is up!

Plenty of fish to be caught on the MN side, maybe some experts could chime in, but that’s probably getting close to downrigging time on the main basin. A lot of folks will troll spinners too, but once the fish spread out in the mud in the summer, it’s tough to outproduce downrigging. Maybe with this late spring you might be able to get on a good amount with jigs though!

I also don’t have much experience on that part of the lake/river, I’ve done most of my fishing on LOW out of Arnesen’s.

Does anyone have any updates or comments how this year is going? I’m also headed up for my first time June 14-17 staying at Sportsmans. Any idea if there will still be a “shoreline” bite in 2 weeks? I’ve heard a lot about Oak Island, but have to believe there are other areas that produce fish other than a 30+ mile boat ride each way, especially that early in June.

Anyone ever trailer up and cross into Canada to launch if it’s real windy?

I have launched out of Angle Inlet a few times to stay at Flag Island resort. Fished the Windfall/Windigo area and it was awesome scenery and good fishing. There are a few shallow rock areas north of Windigo but they were marked last time we were up there, about 5 years ago.

have fished up there on 4th of july many times and had great fishing within 4-5 miles and less outside the gap in 25-30 ft of water and caught huge fish and eater without running out to the islands on jigs

Anyone have experience fishing around Flag Island? My wife and I will be up there 7/4-7/8 and it is out first time up there.

    Thanks

like the guys are saying, pay attention to the wind forecast !!!
I was up there last October late with Denny O and his friend Bob when the winds picked up.
we rode six and half foot back to back rollers for three miles coming back in.
I still get woozy thinking back on that day, sure glad we were not in shallow water where we could of bottomed out !
