Nope never through the ice. That must of been one heck of a battle.
I speared one once, never again. Them scales are like a plate of armour.
Yep I’ve caught a couple through the ice but the one I remember the most was about a 10 lb der I caught on an ultra light with an in line reel that had a minimal drag . That was a blast landing that thing.
Speared through the ice or open water pockets in spring when they are on their spawning run makes really good smoking material. Flesh is sweet and white.
I caught a much smaller one than that through the ice that still was a good fight. I used to target them and still do on occasion to entertain the kids off the dock. Some get pretty big and put up a whale of a fight.
Open water, love catching/accidentally snagging the occasional carp. Wonderful and powerful fighters.
Ice no thank you. Huge PIA and would seem like an absolute flouro/mono spool destroyer for one fish.
That looked like one heck of a fight there.
Iowaboy1 Loves catching those walleyes. Open water or through the ice, he don’t care.
Cousin caught one on Lac Qui Parle once. Right in the middle of an amazing Crappie bite. On a minnow and bobber, with a jiggle stick. He started hollering for me to come help cause he must have on the biggest walleye ever. Nope.
That’s fantastic lol. Happened to me once as well, also on a crappie rod with a minnow. I thought I had the biggest Pike southern MN has ever seen. Nope, just an Iowa Walleye…
Sunfishin in march late ice. Small tungsten jig and 3lb test on the first custom rod I built myself. 45” noodle tip with good back bone. Reel is a Slaters. No drag just a thumb screw to tighten/loosen the spool. Had to feed her line but mostly a hand over hand fight. By far one of the toughest fish I’ve ever tried to get out of the hole. Can’t get a hand around their head or in the gills.
Caught one last year. Same as you. Saw a mark up high and it nailed it. my rod is 28 inches
It was very interesting to me when living in the UK that carp fishing is a huge sport over there and they have the utmost respect for the carp as a species. Techniques for carp fishing over there are highly specialized and very sophisticated. Most lakes and rivers are shallow and most anglers fish from the bank, so targeting super-wary carp that have seen heavy fishing pressure requires a lot of skill and stealth.
It was very interesting talking to anglers over there and watching their carp techniques.
Sheldon do you need some fillets?
Of course he does! Send him whatever fillets you don’t want.
I think he only eats the Cheeks. The butt cheeks, them Iowa guys
Last year panfishing I had one up to the hole but couldn’t get it’s head turned. Eventually broke the line at the jig. Nice fight though. If I remember it was about 6-8 pounds.
