Took to the water last evening for a little scouting. With the rollers open so much of the year along with other reports, I didn’t expect too much.
A fella fishing for channel cats was doing pretty good. He said about a fish per hour. At the end of the night that’s what we ended up with too. Seven hours, seven fish.
The first two LS that came to the boat were around 24 inches. The next was a scrapping 50″ that took Mary’s (Mrs Trumar) breath away. The sturgeon dance. Gotta love it!
Crawlers were king and they brought a 10.5 pound channel cat and a well under 10 pound flathead. Variety is the spice of life.
I called the 30 minute warning to pack up but as normal another LS at 54″x25″ stopped the clock. The photos aren’t very good showing her football girth, but she was a tank. I’m guessing she’s filled with roe for next spring spawning run. She looked like someone put an air pump to her belly.
So the 20 minute clock started running and the last fish of the night grabbed Mary’s crawler. A 46″ Mississippi River style sturgeon that was perfectly colored with out a blemish.
A cool night with water temps at 72 and a b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l clear, star filled night sky.
I spoke with another boater at the backchannel ramp and they said it was slow for them. Nothing like it was two weekends ago. I didn’t think we set any records but with two fish in the 50, Mary and I were very happy.
