A buddy and I got out on a few lakes today, the ice varied between 2″-3″ with the thinner ice towards the center of the lake. We decided to keep it closer to shore on the thicker ice in water deep enough to stand up in and fished for a little bit. Tomorrow there should be safer ice and I hope to get some pictures with fish then. For now here’s a teaser all my fellow ice nuts are chomping at the bit for. Be safe out there guys, don’t rush it, waiting another day, two, or three won’t kill you; not waiting could do just that.

Ben I don’t care how deep the water is. That ice looks neither safe or fun. grin

Looks like our ice most the time down south…..2 -3 is walking ice just not with weight or too many people….

Travis, Personally I won’t walk on 2 inches. The lowest the tape hit was 2.5, but I didn’t carve holes and measure in the spots where the chisel went through so I guessed them at 2″… those spots were walked away from. I assure you Dutchboy, we were extremely cautious today and didn’t venture far from shore, it was much more of a thickness sampling day than a fishing day. Since safety comes before fishing we didn’t risk going very far from shore.

We have to be cautious too……lots of guys like myself tie off from shore and have our ice grips around our necks just encase.

Got out today for a few hours in the afternoon, it was dark with clouds, not a good thing when fishing tea-stained water. Had some aggressive action early and had a nice eater topside that jumped back in the hole while I was retrieving my camera (oops). So here’s my first walleye of the season. Ice was much safer today, going to see how a few other lakes are doing tomorrow and I’ll update more then.

The news in Central WI interviewed this ‘brave’ ice angler and the head of the rescue team in Schofield:

Stieger Lake & Wasserman in Victoria, MN both Ice Covered as of this morning. Lake Bavaria on border of Chaska & Victoria had Ice around the edges, but is much deeper, going to 80ft deep whereas the other 2 are only 30-35ft.

Here is Lake Waconia, looks to be over 50% Ice Covered, but some late season person had their boat out and came back earlier this morning.
