So this is the third time I’m about to need to replace my rubber cover holder.

Although I know it’s my fault, has anyone figured out something better than the original rubber band?

I’m reading mixed reviews about the snap cap and it’s got mixed reviews so I’m wondering if there’s any other nifty innovations out there.

Do you mean just the strap? I added a zip tie to the inside of mine on the stationary end to keep it from falling out of the cover – works great. I’ve also read that people just tie knots in a bungee cord – cheaper and more durable than the original rubber strap.

I love the cold snap covers. Works good on Nils Powerpoint blades also.

So actually what I was reading was that the Snap Cap from strikemaster actually won’t fit the auger if there is any ice buildup on the cover and that it works great in the garage, but doesn’t work as well on the ice and snow.

I will look into the cold snap cover, thanks for the heads up gentlemen!

I use threaded magnets on my covers. Two 3/4 inch magnets work well.

Fishwater, can you give me a picture of how you are doing this with just magnets? Thanks.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I bought the magnets and will be installing that over the summer.

So do you think the magnets are going to work with ice build up? FYI: Magnets will only work with clean even contact on your blade.

Snap cover for me, ice build up or not I’ve had no problem.

I’m surprised at all the good reviews of the snap covers. I originally bought one and it didn’t fit. Email snap cover and they said they have problems with them shrinking from the plastic cooling too quick. They sent me another one and it too didn’t work and I just gave up. I have 10″ lazer blades and got the 10″ model both times. They now just sit in the garage and are reminder of money wasted.

I’m not experienced with magnets and what 17# in pull force feels like, but I am kind of hoping that it will be able to attract the blades through a thin layer of ice. I will report back after everything is installed. These guys do advertise they are, “Your source for the world’s strongest magnets”

If this doesn’t work out like I’d hoped, then the snap cap it is.

I’ve not run into a situation were the ice is thick enough to keep the magnet from holding the cover. I had the Ice Hogger magnet kit on my 8″ lazer cap, that always held OK too.

I’ve got a strikemaster with the honda and 8″ bit. I switched to the snap cover this year and found it being kind of a pain to get the cover on when it had frozen up some on the blades. I also broke some chunks out of it when it was really cold one day. Having it outside all of the time doesn’t help my situation I suppose as I’m not in a hard sided shake barely ever. My original cover I swapped out the regular rubber band for a piece of fabric covered shock cord. Kind of like this material. You can get it by the foot typically at any home/hardware store and it’s really good. Doesn’t break in the cold and doesn’t get cut by the blade.
