I have been hoping that this right shoulder would heal but after 13 months I had my rotator cuff and torn bicep repaired! I tore it saving a co worker that was in a construction accident. I planned this for yesterday to hope I would be able to recover for my favorite p 4 spring fishing, the scratcher should be on the water sometime mid to late March pending on my ability to heal up. Dr said 3 month off work so I am hoping for the best! Happy new year to all and I will try to pass time laid up! But really sucks is my birthday is on my favorite day Friday the 13th no partying tomorrow!

Finally got my shoulder surgery

Good luck in your recovery. Shoulder surgery is said to be the most painful of the orthopedic procedures. I concur. I had rotator cuff surgery in 2019. 9 weeks off of work. Early March surgery and didn’t go fishing until Memorial Day weekend. The first week really sucked. 5mg of oxie didn’t do much of anything. Dr’s are being restricted when it comes to pain meds. Think about doubling up your dose the first couple of days. The hardest part is only being able to sleep on your back for 6 weeks. Good thing was I was able to regain full use of my shoulder with zero issues. My Dr. was kinda shocked as I ripped two mussels completely off the bone. Ice is your friend.
Unfortunately, I injured my other shoulder on this Xmas eve pulling a battery out of my truck. I thought I totally shredded it. I have regained most of the use of that shoulder so that’s a good sign. A few sore spots still. I see my surgeon next week. I have to have at least some small tears. Hopefully surgery won’t be required.

If I can recommend something is go to your PT appointments. Especially with that bicep tare you will loose alot of your mobility.
January 12, 2023 at 2:06 pm #2173084I had labrum surgery in HS, and a full replacement 5 years ago. DO YOUR PT. Like really focus on it, do what they tell you to do outside of it, and then do it some more. PT is just as important as the surgery itself, a perfect surgery will not end well if you don’t do your PT.
January 12, 2023 at 2:15 pm #2173092I had this done both bicep tear and rotator cuff 5 years ago. Pt like others say. I started bow hunting again this year because I’m finally back to good strength in my shoulder. When it happened originally, I couldn’t get my elbow away from my body
January 12, 2023 at 4:43 pm #2173147I had new shoulder going on three years ago.
DO YOUR THERAPY.
It is GREAT now.
DO YOUR THERAPY and follow your PT’s guidance.January 13, 2023 at 7:49 am #2173294Good luck Scratcher, I just had the same procedure done last week on my left shoulder and bicep. How ironic my b-day was the day after also. After the fourth day I quit taking the high powered pain meds and just sticking to Tylenol, which seems to be just enough. A buddy is running over a shoulder compression/ice pack today since workmens comp didn’t think I needed one, not sure if you are using one but all I’ve had are the hospital issued packs. Sleeping, that has been the hardest part, we have 7 recliners between all the couches and I’m lucky to get 4 or 5 hours of uncomfortable sleep. Good luck and it’s a good thing for streaming some good shows to pass the time !!
Brad DimondPosts: 1462January 13, 2023 at 9:05 am #2173333Agree with all of the advice regarding PT. Do what is prescribed by the therapist, no less and no more. Doing too much is as bad as doing too little. Too much PT creates inflamation and degrades healing.
Also agree with the statement that ice is your friend. It’s your best friend!
Good luck, you have a lot of work and a lot of good things coming your way.
January 13, 2023 at 10:25 am #2173402The 1st day no ice, but lots of ice since, the sleeping situation is not been good but will get better I hope soon

Iowaboy1Posts: 3789January 14, 2023 at 10:26 am #2173642I hope you get well soon Scratcher, and follow the advice given by those who have been through it by following the PT to the letter.
Many Drs. around here are starting to tell patients that dont follow the PT too bad so sad, you were told what to do and to fix it is going to hurt worse than the first time.
In fact, I know three people around my area that still are not healed up, one hip, a knee, and a shoulder and they are wishing like heck they would have followed orders.I feel your pain on being limited to one arm, my right arm was in a cast for almost half of a year.
January 24, 2023 at 4:49 pm #2175910How you doing a couple weeks in Scratcher? Still icing, small exercises? I tell ya tho i’m a week ahead of ya and the range of motion has improved, it feels good to have the sling off. Showering is still tough and shut eye but that’s slowly coming around. We’ll be doing cartwheels before ya know it!!

Ya I should have worded that differently Scratcher, I’m still using the sling but it feels good to sit around without it now and then. I was taking a couple Advil PM to help sleep but have gotten rid of those also.
