Finally found a rifle I don't like to shoot

I got to send a few (7 total) rounds down a 416 Weatherby Mag. 120.6 gr of IMR 7828 with a 325 gr Barnes Bullet. I flinched on the last 3 rounds really bad. A 50 BMG is a heck of a lot easier to shoot. This thing is a BEAST. I was kidding around about using it for P/dogs. You could take out the entire mound with it

I shot a .416 Rigby single shot once and I mean once. Patterning a turkey gun is more fun.

Sorry tried to load a video of a guy shooting a 600 nitro pistol and it bucking right out of his hands but th efile is too big. Imagine a 600 nitro in a 12″ barel and a pistol!

I did one shot from a double 416 Rigby and that was a good plenty. I owned a .458 Winchester for many years and that was said to have 65 foot pounds of recoil, about double that of a 3″ 12 gauge in a 9 pound gun. I handled that fairly well. But that .416 was a brute. The .460 Weatherby is said to have 110 foot pounds of recoil, obviously not intended to be shot by a skinny boy.

Unlike the .22 cal. rifles one need not wonder if the barrel is shot out from overuse when shopping for rifles chambered in these large magnum calibers.

Ouch, that caliber is a brute. I have shot it once and only once, also. It puts my .30-30 BFR to shame…

I’m told that when faced with a charging cape buffalo or hippo, you won’t even notice the recoil. That’s what I’ve been told. I don’t personally buy it.

    I shot a 416 Remington. Once. Ouch.

I don’t believe the old nitro express rifles buck harder than the 416 and 460 classes of modern cartridges. I recall an African PH commenting on this in a panel discussion on African hunting. He said after guiding hundreds of clients who used 416 of various makings, he’d never seen ANYONE shoot a 416 really well. Himself included.

I had, and I mean had a new 45/70 Marlin Guide Gun. The barrel was of poor workmanship as rifling was scant in parts of it. But still I played around and found the hotter the load the better the group. Once approaching Grizzly Ammo loads she shot well..but at a great cost to my body. Bye bye 45/70, replaced with older jm stamped barrel, no cross bolt safety 444 Marlin. It shoots the Hornady Superformance wonderfully and doesn’t kill me.

An acquaintance (my “friends” are smarter than this) used his 460 Wby to fire a 20-shot NRA prone match at 600yds about 20 years ago. He’s an eccentric…keeps snakes, tarantulas, etc and is generally as bizarre as a football bat. He kept all of the shots on paper (the paper is 72″ x 72″) and now he gets people like me to tell people about this bizarre escapade.

Though I have fired 50BMG’s, 375HH Imp and some other thumpers, the worst experience I had was load-testing a Ruger #1 in 45/70 with some souped up loads using Reloader 7. In a 7-1/2# Ruger #1 from the bags, a souped up 45/70 gives recoil that is very unpleasant. Had a padded NRA Highpower jacket on and even that didn’t help once I started hitting hotter load levels. OUCH.
