Another dad and I have repeatedly taken the kids once a year for a 2 night stay in a wheelhouse. Some years have been ok but nothing to get the kids really excited. Always enough to keep interest with some northerns, crappies and a few smaller walleye. But we planned it again this year with high hopes and it finally paid off! Memories were made and had a blast!

Good job Dad! It’s all about the experience man! Going on 6 years wheelhouse’n. From day one I’ve stopped EVERY trip even if it’s not convenient to let the kids pick out 1 lure each at a tackle shop. I try an make it to the bait shops that are staples of the area (Tutts when it was open, Prince’s, Border bait, Big Dick’s, Black Duck, etc.) and make it a big deal. Make sure you got plenty of snacks and games to play in the off times. If all else fails drill a bunch of holes around the shack and tell them to have at it. I’ve found out the less I help, the more they get into it. They try an do more on their own, thus keeping them busy and killing more time during the slow times. I’ve went so far as letting the the the older one drive my pickup on the ice road, and the younger one drilling his own hole. Before you know it they will be watching IDO on TV telling mom to Shhhhh when James is Yacking about his on the spot. This week we left the house at 3 am Sunday for Red, got home at Thursday late afternoon. When we were packing up they were complaining that they wanted to stay. Guess what, they are already stoked for next weekend. Before long mom will even start joining you when she starts hearing how much fun you guys are having. Just make it fun, the rest will come natural.
