Here’s a link with the information from MN DNR website, you only need a license if you plan on leaving it on the ice overnight, no matter what type of fish house:

    http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/licenses/fishing/index.html?type=fishing

    Angling – dark house shelter (r) – Code 119

    Description:

Dark houses, fish houses, and portable shelters placed on the ice for shelter while fishing do not need a license unless the house will be left unattended overnight. See fishing regulations book for display requirements Fishing House or Dark House.

    Fee:

    $ 15.00

Like Tonka said, only if you leave it out overnight, which would not be a bright idea if you ask me.. Far to easy to steal or even blow away if its two windy

See fishing regulations book for display requirements Fishing House or Dark House.

I believe portables still require identity information regardless if they’re left out overnight. If I remember correctly you can use your DNR number or address, 2″ letters, etc, etc. Regs should have the details.

From the 2014 MN fishing regulations booklet:

“All shelters, except for occupied* portable shelters, placed on the ice of
Minnesota waters must have either the
    (1) complete name and address, (2) driver’s license number, or (3) the nine-digit
Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainly
and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches in
    height.
*A person using a portable shelter on the ice that does not display
identification must remain within 200’ of the shelter.”

Just to show you how ridiculous it used to be I got a ticket for not having an ice house license the last winter it was in effect and all I did was use it as a seat. Top was open.

Welcome to IDO(or, In-Depth now I guess)! First rate group of people on here, I can’t count the number of times folks on here have helped out with advice, support or tips. To be fair, I’m from Wisconsin so can’t really count all that high, but still this is an awesome group to hang out with!
