We could go back and forth about the hit, but I agree, fighting is a good way to police the dirty hits!

The NHL is trending away from fights, which is a good thing imo. However, it shouldn’t be eliminated entirely either, imo, as hits like the one on Oshie last night will steadily increase with no fear of retribution. No idea how that was only a 2 minuter. Maybe if they tied the penalty to the amount of time the injured player is out they could rid the game of fights entirely.Sorry, but the hit on Oshie was not a bad hit and did not deserve any more than 2 minutes. The out come was a bad deal yes, but it wasn’t a purposeful bad hit at all. I like Oshie alot and always have from his days as a Fighting Sioux, but he just got a bad result. I wish I could find the video of him leaving his feet to put an enormous hit on a guy as a Sioux. The hit last night was nothing compared to that.
A cross-check to the back when you already have speed a few feet away from the boards like that is the most dangerous play in hockey as it throws you completely off balance and you don’t have time & space to brace yourself hitting the boards…When hitting another person, there’s a give & take of energy that gets absorbed by our body and equipment, none of that happens when hitting the boards…
April 19, 2019 at 12:55 pm #1851921Make the penalties severe enough and fighting will go away. How much fighting do you see in the Olympics? Not much if any. The other reason there’s fighting in the NHL is even with 2 referees, they don’t call all the penalties. Call the penalties and the level of frustration will rarely reach the point to drop the gloves. Why is cross checking allowed in front of the goal but not elsewhere?

You raise a very valid point in reference to Olympics/International play. Those games are called much closer than the NHL. What a player can get away with in the NHL, they may not in the majority of the cases in International play. You also don’t see “fighters” in International play at all so both of those factors are in play.
Fighting doesn’t bother me as much as the “code” or the fact that someone needs to fight someone else for a hit made previously. Case in point the whole Dumba hit against Giordano?? Dumba got jumped immediately, but didn’t fight. That was a clean open ice hit. Then, the Flames and Wild faced each other again and Dumba was called to task by Tkatchuk and we all know what ended up happening there. There should have been NO obligation or expectation for Dumba to fight in that scenario, 1) it was a clean hit 2) the Flames goon already jumped him and pummeled him into the ice after the initial incident happened.
April 19, 2019 at 1:47 pm #1851926There isn’t a lot of history between teams and players in the Olympics because they are limited in the games they play. But then again..
tswobodaPosts: 8703April 19, 2019 at 2:29 pm #1851931And those incidents happened quite some time ago. If you are saying those injuries happened because they didn’t fight, I’d say they happened because of cheap shots and goonery which really isnt a part of the game anymore.
Both incidents literally happened because the victim refused to fight all game.
Fighting in hockey is like when liquor stores were closed on Sundays. It’s been around for so long that people think it’s normal. When in reality it’s completely ludicrous.
For the Boogaard fans… he died at 29 years old because there’s fighting in hockey.

No they literally happened because one guy smacked his stick blade on another guys Temple and another guy jumped on another guy and pile drove his head into the ice. By your logic there would be more serious injuries without fighting because guys would refuse to fight because it was illegal to fight.

You said no one is forced to fight…
McSorely was instigating Bradshear but Bradshear refused to fight him. So he got a stick to the temple. So I suppose he wasn’t forced to fight but which option would you pick?
Same story for Bertuzzi and Moore. Bertuzzi was after him all game and when he wouldn’t fight he thought he deserved his face pile drived into the ice. Again, not much for choices there.
All in the name of “the code”. I mean if those guys woulda just fought then they woulda stayed outta the hospital right?
Iowaboy1Posts: 3827April 19, 2019 at 6:59 pm #1851973I went to the fights the other night and a hockey game broke out !!

I’ve said nothing about “the code”. Those were irresponsible responses to guys who wouldn’t fight.
April 19, 2019 at 7:15 pm #1851977I’m all for fighting. I’m also against visors. The game thrived for many years with the players policing themselves. Like all those who want to change baseball just understand that hockey isn’t for everyone. For those that like passive games I suggest golf & darts.
When the game becomes to dangerous players will quit playing. The most dangerous thing in hockey is those who want to keep changing the game.

an oldie but a goody, some of you are too young to remember this movie.Any true hockey fan of any age has this on their top 10 list of all time favorite movies. Nobody is too young to remember.
It’s considered the best sports movie of all time.

Bring the kids, we’ve got entertainment for the whole family!April 21, 2019 at 10:11 am #1852152Slapshot was great because it had a good plot. I watched Goon too, and that’s pretty good as well if I am remembering correctly.
Miracle was awesome because they did a great job recreating all the scoring plays to be pretty close to the original and the hockey was pretty realistic. Not to mention a great true story plot.
Tom schmittPosts: 1018April 21, 2019 at 2:56 pm #1852180Back to the original post. Until the NHL allows and encourages the refs to call penalties after the whistle blows there will be fighting.
Fights happen when penalties aren’t called.
Score a goal receive a cross-check, no call. Total BS.
