Man o Man! My first lake sturgeon through the ice and it was everything I hoped it would be.

PLUS I met this 14 year old girl named Stormy. She is so darn lovely!

I’m past my bed time, but I thought I would do a quick post.

That TUCR the “Sturgeon Edition” was awesome.

Thanks to John @ TUCR for putting out a sensitive, yet tough rod and a special thanks to Sharptailer for guiding me to my first incredible fighting fish! bow

I could see paradise by the fish house light!

Two years ago as I was winding the 20 pound Tug O War line on the reel I was scratching my head wondering how this thin little thread was going to bring in a 50+ inch sturgeon through the ice. I thought it would break on the bottom of the hole. I’m use to using 80 pound braid. Even when the line would go twing by snapping of an edge of the hole there wasn’t any problem, but I’m sure Sharptailer would say every time I heard that noise my eye got larger!

And a 44″ tooth pick for a rod? The tip of the TUCR was down the hole a couple times…adjust drag, lift, adjust drag, repeat. Dang, it was the most fun I’ve had standing up in a long time!

It might seem odd to some that this was my first sturgeon through the ice but last year being the first year it was legal to target them, my mother was getting ready to move up stairs and there just wasn’t any time. This year, up until now I was tied up with a couple personal issues so I just followed the guys that were icing sturg closely.

We had a solid 20″ of ice in the Bayport area.

Thanks Andy for pointing Sharptailer my direction. He sure is a sturgeon nut too!

Yes. I never heard of one before Ryan. She was such a sweetheart. 14 years old and loved her master. I didn’t have a chance with her. )

LOL My left hand was shaking 20 minutes after we let her go. Makes it real hard to send a text message.

Yes for as many sturgeon as I have caught, I still get pretty wound up on each one!

Sounds like a good time for sure! Heckuva battle on the ice. I cannot even imagine tangling with something like that and hoping to get it up a hole.

It’s really hard for me to tell…I was kinda busy. )

I’m guessing 10-15 minutes. I was pretty impressed sense we use the long rods in the summer and it took about the same amount of time.

This one kept make me second guess the drag setting. I….LOVE IT!
