What is your preferred rod for skipping lures under docks, tree overhangs, etc? Spinning, baitcaster, length, power, tip action, etc..? And what line do you prefer to use as well as favorite lures to skip?

I mostly skip with my spinning rod. It’s a 7′, medium with a fast tip St Croix LTB blank and 20# braid with a fluorocarbon leader. Mainly skipping wacky senkos with it. 7′ might be a bit too long, next year i’ll probably get something in the 6′-9″ range. Over this last summer I also started skipping with a baitcaster using mostly ribbit frogs and some skipping jigs. There’s definitely an art to it, but I’m slowly getting better at it and it’s quite fun! I’ll most likely have a rod built for that application next spring. Probably a 6′ 8-9″, medium heavy with a fast tip. Maybe a moderate fast if skipping lighter jigs and plastics.

I prefer to use spinning rods and a Zoom Super Fluke. A 5’6″ St. Croix Premier MH and 6′ MH Fenwick Techna AV. 14lb Fireline Smoke.

I just picked up a St. Croix Bass Legend 5′-10″ MXF “Skipping” rod. Haven’t figured out a reel for it yet, but I think this could be fun. C’mon spring, get here!

Getting under docks is a great way to get nice crappies and sunfish too, but of course the tackle is lighter and often doesn get the job done. I will “shoot” a small jig back under a dock by holding the jig while the line is held tight [rod loaded] to the handle with a finger. Aim and release and that’ll get the jig back in the dark. Takes practice but the techniques are similar. I can see where bass tackle might call for a specialty rod for doing this.

    Good topic.
