    So far,
What is your favorite size and color Rippin Rap for each species you fish for?

so far I have caught only one fish with a rippin rap in 2 seasons of ice fishing, despite the fact it’s the first bait I always try. Caught a 16″ walleye with a number 5 fire tiger. I was absolutely amazed with the show James and Pat did catching crappies on them, none of the crappies I find are very interested in it.

So far for me it has been the ultra light number 4 in the uv green tiger. The crappies and perch seem to like it.

Walleye: Chrome Blue with most success on the Ultra Light size. Haven’t caught another species on one yet.

Only fish I’ve caught with it were LG Bass and it was the number 6 in Helsinki, open water casting last year. I don’t think color would have mattered because they were smacking it as soon as it hit the water. I’m not a real good stick yet though. Some day.

E: oops sorry, I didn’t notice this was in the ice fishing forum. Haven’t iced a fish with it.

On the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers, we have caught numerous fish of all species (mostly walleye/saugers) on the number 06 chartreuse shad and pearl grey shiner. Vertical jigging and pitching, I prefer to pitch the 05 size more though. Just an awesome bait and will put fish in the boat when nothing else will.

Oddly, I’ve caught a bunch of sheepshead on them too, even when they wouldn’t touch a dragging jig with crawler on it, weird, I know!

Both my fishing partner and I have all colors and sizes, and chartreuse shad and pearl grey shiner colors account for most of our fish, out of all the colors. This is for murky river water.

Sorry, I didn’t realize it was ice fishing either! I use the UL size on ice, not as much luck as open water. I do better with tungsten and plastic for panfish and jigging raps for eyes, on ice.

#7 Natural Perch has worked well in open water so far…

Through the ice the #4 Yellow Perch has been awesome for walleye in MN and SD lakes with decent clarity. The UV Green Tiger #4 has been awesome up on LOTW for walleye where the water is more stained. And the Pink UV has been the crappie killer for me wherever we go.

I’ve had good luck with them all, in all sizes too. I switched to more of the ultra lights this year. Firetiger and blue chrome seem to be what the walleyes want more often then not. I’ve started dabbling in painting my own lures and finally found a blank that resembles the ultra light rippin raps. The best news, is that I’ve caught fish on the custom ones as well (for a fraction of the price). A small part of me dies when I lose a rapala.

Been a mixed bag of baits and types of fish. i have to say the smaller profile of the #4 has worked better than the #5. And the uv patterns seem to irritate a strike over the metallic. And I really mean irritate the strikes seem more aggressive on the uv colors.
