I’ve got the house to myself and I’m just not that into basketball, so I’m watching a John Wayne movie instead. I think I’m going to go with Hondo. Any of you out there have a favorite Duke movie or a few?

Off the top of of my head, in no particular order, my favorites of his are probably:

    The Sons of Katie Elder
    Hondo
    El Dorado

But then again there’s The Searchers, True Grit, The Cowboys, geez…..so hard to even narrow it down.

The Searchers is my number one by far. It inspired Buddy Holly to write a hit single.

Never got into John that much. Nothing against him, just not my style is guess. With that said love the character he played and the movie Hatari.

Dan, “The Duke” was great in every movie he ever made; however, he was at his absolute best while playing Admiral Rockwell “Rock” Torre in the 1965 movie: In Harm’s Way. If you have not seen it, you need to. Enjoy the movie–Go Navy!!

I can honestly say I don’t think I have ever seen a movie with him in it, and I am almost 50.

The Cowboys!! Part of a great family tradition that started 20+ years ago. All the guys in my wife’s family get together for a fishing trip. Watched the Cowboys each year on Saturday eve, it went from the 7 young boy cousins (same age as the kids in the show) loving it, to us dads making them watch it as teenagers, to them requesting to watch it as 20 yr olds. The Cowboys will always be my best JW movie because of that!! Can’t wait to watch it this year, hope all the “boys” can make it!

Rio Bravo. Classic Western with Walter Brennan, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Angie Dickenson in her first major role, Ward Bond. How can you go wrong with a lineup like that? Never tire of that movie.

The Green Berets is probably my favorite, but he didn’t make a movie I haven’t liked. I love them all. He is my favorite actor by far.

Fill your hand you sob. Big talk for a one eyed fat man. And of course I am looking at a tin star with a drunk pinned on it. Dk

Well done catmando, those are all great. One of my favorites of his is from Hondo, when the lady he’s interacting with is dismayed over the death of the great Apache Victorio. After seeing her disturbed over the news the Duke tells her “Everyone gets dead, it was his turn.” My family has literally used that phrase about other friends and family at their time of passing haha.

Big Jake was always my favorite. So many lines in that movie! I haven’t seen it in a while so I’m a little rusty but I love the dialogue…..

“Jacob McCandles? I thought you were dead!”
“Not hardly. And I swear the next man that says that to me, I’m gonna shoot him dead!”

“You can call me dad. You can call me father. You can call me a son of a b…, but if you ever call me ‘daddy’ again, we’re gonna finish this fight!”

    “Dog!”

“Ohhh…. Now what’d he have to go and do that for?”

“Have you ever been to Nacadocious?”

    “Ahh… You remembered my greeners!”

I do like McLintock and Hondo and Rio Bravo as well. But I have a special spot for “The Quiet Man”. Whenever he played opposite Maureen O’Hara…. it was just awesome.

“The Quiet Man”. I just watched it the other night for the 719th time. Not your typical John Wayne movie but a darn good one.

Pug that’s from Hondo, it’s John Wayne’s accelerated method of teaching someone how to swim.
