What’s your favorite dish that your parents or grandparents cooked? I know this might be better for the members recipes but I think we could all use a post like this especially since a lot of us might be inside cooking a lot for a while.

Mine is goulash. My moms was simple but it always tasted so good

    Shells
    Hamburger
    Onions
    Celery
Campbells tomato soup as the sauce
Heavy on the salt and pepper

I make it myself but it just doesnt taste as good.

When I was growing up my dad liked to cook, he learned from his Polish mother: Chicken dumpling soup on Sunday after all star wrestling after 10:30 mass.

My moms ( bless her heart ) ham dinner with mashed spuds and gravy. She would rub in brown sugar after she made slits in the ham and put pineapple slices on top. After the ham was done she used the drippings to make her gravy. Absolutely awesome !

I was going to say something about a gal I used to date years ago but I see everyone is talking about food, dang!

    Anyway, Mom’s homemade fried chicken.
When the lard she used was up to temp she would toss in an entire sliced onion to flavor the oil, remove the onion slices when crispy then fry the chicken.

The homemade chicken gravy was out of this world!

We were served this same dish in school and they called it goulash. It is nothing like our version and I’ve always wondered how pasta got in there.

My favorite old country dish is gulas from the Bohemia region of today’s Czech Republic. Each family has their own version, but pasta was never a part of any I’ve ever had.

I make hovezí gulas s knedlikem or gulas with beef and dumplings. Awesome.

Fun fact, in Bohemian gulas means “mismatched things together” or mishmash as we would say.

My Grandma’s mashed potatoes were legendary. Included sour cream, cream cheese, milk, garlic salt. The top was coated with paprika, which, when baked gave it a golden red crust on the top and the insides were rich and creamy.

I do miss her, and her cooking smile

My mom still makes the best Meatloaf EVER! My favorite, hands down. Grandma makes a mean Hamburger Soup I love as well. The soup kettle is never big enough.

My mom made pot roast and instead of adding potatoes she’d make homemade noodles. Shed put a dish towel over a chair and drape the noodles over it to dry. When the roast was done shed remove it from the pot and cook the noodles in the juices. The flour on the noodles made a gravy and were just about the best thing I’ve ever had.
My daughter’s and wife have worked hard to duplicate it and after many failed attempts they nailed it! It’s now a family favorite and we always raise a glass to mom who passed away at 58 years old.
I’m sure she laughed at all the failed attempts!

Fried chicken livers…my Dad made some for himself the other day and set me a picture. Of course no one in my house will even consider trying them.
My Great Grandmas fried chicken, chocolate angel food cake, rye bread…just about ANYTHING that woman cooked was amazing. She fed threshing crews from a wood stove during the depression. Man that woman was tough, but boy could she cook!

Yep! My mom put more veggies in it. Canned corn sometimes peas or green beans she always snuck stuff in to get us kids to eat our veggies. I still make it that way today. Eating veggies was never a problem for me. I can remember sitting in front of the tv eating creamed corn or peas and carrots out of a can! That was a snack for me! lol

Grandma’s (German) chicken and noodles. Nothing like I would normally be drawn to, not a ton of flavor, but all comfort.

Other Grandma’s (Southern gal) fried chicken, amazing

Tough to pick just one, but tough to beat mom’s potato dumplings with roasted pork shoulder and saurkraut.

In the fall/winter my grandma would make some pretty killer goulash. Big bowl of that with a slice of buttered homemade bread was pretty tough to beat. In the summer time you could usually count on a slice of rhubarb custard cake after mowing trails or stacking firewood.

60 years ago my mom made corn bread smeared with home churned butter melted in. I’ve tried hundred different corn breads since never even close, sad.
