I was hoping to rattle in a buck this morning out of the same stand I shot Sebastian out of this year. Right at 6:30am, the farmer comes along and starts disking the cattle pasture….in fact, he’s disking at the moment and I’m still in the tree. What is the purpose of doing that at this time of year?

The ground is not frozen and the ground is dry enough. If he waits until spring and does it, he will have to wait for the frost to leave the ground and wait for the field to dry to turn under last years crop remains. That could potentially push back planting in the spring. That is why my family always did it in the fall.

Is it safe to say that he’ll be planting something?

At some point, not necessarily this fall unless it is winter wheat but I think it is too late for that.

What was the field planted in this year? He could be getting it ready to do a fall plant of alfalfa.

The OP said the ground being worked was a cattle pasture right now.

Tom, I thought you shot your buck already this year.. Are you just out rattling in bucks for fun?

Where our farm is at about 20 miles west of Alexandria the soil is so rich that if you don’t break it right before freeze up the fields stay muddy a lot longer in the spring and will delay your spring turn by several weeks which then pushes back your planting.

He could also have designs on adding nitrogen by breaking it up and then having anhydrous ammonia applied. Which you would definitely NOT want to be in the stand for.

Could be good, could be bad, no way to tell until you know what he’s planting.

I did. I’m just trying to see how the bucks respond to rattling and grunting. I just love being in the stand in the fall!
In the 4 years that i’ve been hunting this farm, this is the first time that the farmer has disked the field. It’s been a cattle pasture ever since i started hunting it.
