For winter 2019-20, it says the country should expect a “polar coaster” with ups and downs all season. The almanac predicts the coldest conditions will be felt across the middle of the country, from the Rockies to the Appalachians. … It also says the season may linger as spring 2020 gets off to a slow start.

I recently looked at the NOAA winter prediction that came out in Oct/Nov and they gave an equal chance for a colder, normal or warmer than average winter. I interpreted that as they didn’t know what it was going to do. The only thing they predicted was a greater chance of precipitation.

Guess they have a chance at getting that right yet.

The NOAA climate predictions are typically very inaccurate compared to other climate predictions. I’ve been following this very closely this season and have learned that there are about a dozen different systems to consider when making long term climate predictions. NAO, NPO, El Niño/ La Niña to name a few. The predictions rely on these systems remaining stable throughout the winter and that hasn’t happened this year.

The farmers almanacs usually predicts cold and snowy winter for us. They just word it differently every year. Something a 5 year old can predict.

So far this season has been a nice break from the last couple. I know a couple of people who threw in the towel and moved south after last winter. We have deserved this break. I feel bad for the resorts up north, but that’s how it goes sometimes.

I would say the resorts up north are having a boom year. Lots of snow with mild temps make for great snowmobiling conditions at least in northern WI. Those resorts rely on the snowmobile traffic a lot more than the ice fishing traffic. Maybe different situation in northern MN.

Yes. Banner winter so far for resorts in my neighborhood. Snowmobiling has been good to great since Christmas. We’ve had fishable ice since the 1st of November and tons of snow since the 1st of December. Along with no bitter prolonged cold snaps. That said nobody can predict a season ahead just like no one can predict the week ahead.
