Ive casted chatterbaits where I see sunnies busting the surface. Quite a few pike, but some decent bass, too. My hook up average on frogs is about as low as Joey Gallo’s batting average.

Whats the bite right now ? I need to get a Vietnam veteran on fish Sunday morning down In the savage area. I haven’t been out in 2 weeks.
Moving baits ? Or do I opt out and drag minnows

I would try moving baits in shallow water around weeds. The water is still very warm in the area and its supposed to be like 85 on Sunday. I observed 70 degree water temps last weekend before the rains came. JMO

I had 67 water temps on a west metro lake yesterday. Moving baits were the top catcher – chatterbaits for me… another guy that fished the same lake said cranks were the ticket. Surprisingly shallow, as Gimruis said around remaining green weeds helped. I got a couple on poop baits too but they were on specific targets like rock piles. Off shore is cooling off right now..

Thanks for the heads up guys. I’m not to sure how well the old man cast or for how long. I’ll probably rig up some cranks to drag and some baits to cast. If he can cast that’ll be great. If not we will drag some shallow cranks over the weeds

Not sure where you are headed in the Savage area. But if its Prior, you cant go wrong with a Jig worm. Its also great for someone who has not fished a lot. A stick worm or Slug go with a small split shot also is a great bait for someone who does not fish much or has limited casting ability. Another lake in that area possibly worth a shot is Spring lake. Not near the #’s as Prior, but some bigger fish. As least it use to be when I lived in the area. Usually around this time of the year when a lot of the docks started to be pulled it would concentrate the fish on the remaining docks. I often caught some of my biggest fish of the year on Spring in the Fall. Docks may not be the easiest thing for someone who does not fish often though.

The last couple days the DT10 was crushing mid depth weedlines. Nothing huge, but good numbers.

Wacky rig, not a good search bait but when you have a good spot that will work, he can sit and work it, huge window for setting the hook and bass love it! Good luck, great to take those guys out.

Well I took the vet fishing and we caught 0 bass lol. But he caught a bunch of pike. With one being 32ish. He said he had a ton of fun and next weekend we are going crappie fishing on the same lake.

I struggled yesterday too. I caught 6 bass and 4 pike. It was freaking hot out there. By 9:30am it was completely dead out there.

Yesterday was overcast and cool with 65 degree water. My wife and I went out and casted chatterbaits. Got a good number of bass and pike in 6fow or less. Today was hot and flat. Pretty slow.

It’s amazing the lessons you learn by fishing in a tournament vs. if it was just you on the water. I didn’t catch a bass on the Whitefish Chain on Saturday until after noon. My boater discovered they wanted a blue chatterbait and was catching fish pretty much one after another at the front of the boat. Finally, I accepted his offer to run the trolling motor and I had a limit within an hour and a half. From the back of the boat he kept pace with me slow rolling the chatterbait. I was getting bit burning it, so I never slowed down. I figured everyone would bring in a limit by the way we were catching them. That was not the case. I was the only non-boater to weigh a limit and we had one boater who didn’t get a limit as well and he is one of the clubs top sticks. The pike were on fire for everyone. I did cull 3 times. Once on the Chatterbait, once with a jig fishing a deep weedline, and once on a ToadZ.

We had our annual fall Fish and Chips event on Sat. My boater and I finished 2nd in the fishing part with a 4 bass limit weighing 12-14. Kind of a junk fishing day. Caught fish both deep and shallow. A few on a Neko rig on the weed line, a few on jigs just inside the weedline, a few on a chatterbait out over a 7-8 ft weed flat, and some on docks on a weightless stick worm. The area had a fairly big storm the night before with lots of rain and striping winds. The bite was off right away in the morning but got better as the day went along

Picked up some 5-6 inch spoons and am going to give that technique a shot late fall here. Planning on targeting weed edges and points. Also ordered some new Bagley Bang O Spintails. I lost the last one I owned. One of the best topwaters I’ve ever used. Northland started making them again when they purchased Bagley. Hopefully they are similar to the originals.

Getting out midweek this week and hopefully get some good action on them.

I think our targeting bass has ended for the year. I’m sure when will still catch a few while mostly targeting walleyes. The water temps dropped from 66 on Thur. To 60-61 yesterday. Time to try and get a few meals of Walleyes. For those of you still chasing the bass. I think you will need to start slowing down the baits. If I were to keep chasing them, I’d have a jerk bait and a spinnerbait on and fished most of the time. Good luck. Now if the time of the year to have a shot as some big fat fall fish.

This is PB time. Water temps in the 50s is still good for me.

KVD 2.5 squarebill silent crankabit was a killer this weekend. The fish were schooled up and focused on cabbage or green coontail. Other weeds were absent of fish.

Yup, prime time & that will be over quickly, time to bring live bait to hedge your bets. IMHO

Live bait just doesn’t do it for me. It’s a mess and it takes no skill or technique. No offense to anyone who uses it, but it’s just not how I like to fish.

A friend and I did well with the largemouth today. Went just north of the metro for about 5 hours and caught 22 largemouth and 4 pike. A slow rolled spinnerbait or a slow retrieved chatter bait were both effective. Had to be reeled in slow though, as water temps have dropped to 57 degrees. Got 5 big ones, including a 19.5 incher that weighed over 5 pounds. It was his biggest largemouth this season. No live bait for this guy. Cast and retrieve is much more entertaining.

Couldn’t get anything this morning on moving baits. Only fish I caught came of docks. The frustration continues.

A friend and I went to Mille Lacs today and caught 12 smallmouth, 3 pike, and a walter. The walleye just happened to be in the keeper slot. Four of the smallmouth were 20+ inches. A jerk bait was the most effective presentation. No live bait for this guy. At one point I caught a smallmouth, walleye, and pike on three consecutive casts in the same spot. Kind of an odd trifecta.

That’s awesome gim. Was there any size to the Northern. I don’t catch many of them in that lake , but when I see them they all are pretty decent.
