going camping with the wife and dogs and she wants to sleep in our van which doesnt have a trailer hitch. So im looking for a good camping place probably on smallmouth or trout river within 2-3 hrs of the Twin Cities that I can shore fish. It can be in Wi or MN. Any advice except leave the wife at home (LOL)? Thanks

So you’re saying you will be living in a van down by the river? lol

Upper St Croix always turns on in the fall. You could try the State Park on the Mn or Wi side. Or look for something further upstream.
That’s all that is coming to mind but I know there are more places.

If you’re still talking Sept you should be okay but if it’s Oct make sure you check Regs for seasons if you end up on a trout stream. It’s common for season closures on Oct 1.

I woud agree that just about any of the state parks along the st croix river would be good bets. Lots of shore fishing. You could even rent a canoe there and fish some of the islands.

The st louis river up near floodwood has some great bank fishing to offer. Park right in town on the river for camping. We used to head east of town to one of the old landings. From there hop on the service road for the train tracks and follow that along the river for miles and find various spots to stop.

I was out at Whitewater last weekend. Fall colors are just starting to turn. The hiking was great. I did throw a line in a few times, but didn’t have any luck. The fish were there, but wouldn’t hit what I was throwing. It is catch and release only for trout down there right now through October 1st I believe. Even though the fishing was slow, the camping and hiking was awesome. If you haven’t been to Whitewater before, I would highly recommend it. If you go, don’t forget to climb the Elba Firetower!

It’s awesome! Quite a hike up the bluff, though.

We stayed at the MN side of Interstate SP a few weeks ago. The St. Croix was/is really swollen. Fishing from our campsite was nearly impossible, but there is nearby shore access.

Later in fall find yourself a park that has access to the outer bends of a river. Current becomes key and don’t matter if you have 10miles of shoreline to fish if it’s a straight shot most all fish will be holding on the bend 1mile further south.
