    hey all,

I’m trying to plan a fall milacs fishing trip for the first weekend in October and was looking for some input. I’ve been on the lake before, but not to fish it. Any recommendation on targeting the north or south side of the lake (so I can line up lodging) or what presentations I should prepare to use for walleye in the fall would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

You can catch them a lot of different ways that time of year, but my favorite is to catch them casting paddle tails and jig raps up shallow. You can do that on just about any part of the lake. Sand and gravel outside of weeds is a pattern, as well as rock to sand transitions. 10-18 FOW is usually the depth.

If that’s the case any lure over 8″ will due the trick for “northerns”

From June 1 through Nov. 30, no fishing from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. except for species and methods listed below:
Muskellunge and northern pike may be targeted with artificial lures longer than 8 inches or sucker minnows longer than 8 inches. While fishing during the night closure, you may not possess or target any species other than muskellunge or northern pike.

I believe you can’t have a lure in your boat shorter than 8″.

Not any more, you can have them but no use them.

I seriously doubt they will close it anyway. If they do you can fish for small mouth bass the same way you fish for walleye.

I’d like to be able to help, but I don’t fall fish ML at all.

Pat’s advice is solid. Minnows usually work best once the water starts cooling off. There is always fish on the flats also. Just like the majority of the year, your graph is your friend out there. Find fish and fish there.

My experience in the fall has been that just about any presentation can/will work, as long as you are on fish. Rigging big minnows, casting or trolling plastics/raps etc., and the first break area like Pat said is a great starting point. Have had some good trips up shallower and some not so good trips shallower. As far as accommodation’s, I don’t have a ton of experience on the south end so I usually am fishing on the North, or West side, but I don’t think you can go wrong on any side of that lake as long as the wind permits.

Make sure to try some trolling after dark for walleyes. Need to be off the lake by ten but there is plenty of dark before that.
