As the fall season begins to swing towards winter in Ely, a plethora of outdoor activities remain. Grouse numbers were up this Spring and those who have been hitting the woods are being rewarded for their time. The birds are moving into their winter habitat that consists mostly of balsom thickets adjacent to young poplar stands.
Walleye have been true to the season as well, schooling up on deep flats in 28-34 feet of water. Yesterday’s testing showed a #5 jigging rap performs evenly with live minnows on a jig, meaning more aggressive eyes than earlier in the week. Duck hunters are reporting good numbers of divers and bow hunters are seeing more bucks this year than the past few years, with a majority of them being spikes and forks. Nature seems to be bouncing back from the over-predation by wolves for the past decade and a better balance is in sight. Whether you’re hunting, fishing, or just plain getting away–this is a pretty cool place to be right now.
