All male walleyes

During the last 3 wks. of Mn walleye season, a friend and I found walleyes in 13-15 fow, coming in about 2-3 ft. off the bottom. Many times 2-4 would show up on the sonar and were very aggressive. Most were 15-18 inches, with an occasional bigger one. All were males. If they were there for the forage, why no females–is this some sort of pre-spawn deal? Very curious!! Thanks

    Welcome to IDo!

I don’t remember for certain, but I believe the males come in first.

Someone will be here to answer your question shortly.

On a Lake of the Woods March ice trip I saw the same thing. Every eater walleye(under 19.5″) we cleaned was a male. I asked about it there, but heard no answer that seemed credible.

Was this on a lake or river system?

brian was right, males show up before and stay after the females.

Just got back from a mini vacation. Did my first ever fly fishing in a river on the back side of Pikes Peak in Co. Catch and release only. Fun time!! The walleyes came from a lake!!!
