I am looking for ideas for an ice fishing trip this winter. I don’t ice fish much cuz I never really had much success or fun with it. I am playing with the idea of a 3-5 day fishing trip wher I just bring a buddy and cold weather gear and ice fish for walleye and or lake trout.

    Where should I go?

    Who’d be a good outfitter / guide?

When should I plan a trip?

Last new year’s day I was fishing in Key West in shorts.

This year I’m hoping to be in an ice hut fishing with Anne Margaret. GUSTOFSON!!!!!!

    Any ideas?????

for that time slot away from home, I’d suggest the Waubay SD area. I guess a few more hours windshield time gets you to Lake of the Woods. LOW will have way more options as far as a resort bringing you to your house (on ice) and having everything all set up and all the equipment included.

I am sure you have seen Rainy Daze post, so you have see his catches. He has both permanent and portables and snowmobiles. I personaly would do a combo of the two. As far as past success ,ice fishing can be great one day and mediocre the next. Chris can definitely give you some pointers to improve your catch. I will tell you though you might leave with a stomach ache from “story time”

maybe give us an idea of how far you are willing to drive. I’d think anything more than 8-10 hours is a bit extreme for you desired time frame.

I am willing to go 10 hours more or less.
LOTW is a possibility and Waubay is 1/2 the drive. I fish SD many times each year. But I am looking for the experience of Up Nort ice fishing.

I second Lake of the Woods. I love to stay at either Adrians or WIG WAM. Good people, music and at the Wam!!!

Another thing, is Chris at Rainy Lake. I have been there before and he will pull out every trick in the book to put you on fish. Really nice guy with sleepers available.

even if you wanted to turn left into North Dakota and go the Devils Lake route, this is on my list as well, google in the perch express and they (the motels/resorts) have packages set up with area guides who supply everything. Devils Lake has been on fire and their non-resident license fees are really good. Thing about DL is that once you are there you really are out in the sticks and not much for night life. LOW at Wigwam is kind of the hub for entertainment, and there is usually something going on every weekend. Rainy would be pretty cool, but the drive is out of your range. I’d go LOW for that up north feel.

I would look at Lake Winnipeg as well as Lake of the Woods
