Walleye Setups

    Hello,

I’m new to Walleye fishing and am wondering what rod/reel/line combos I should have at a minimum. Currently, I have two spinning reels – one with 6 lb mono and one with 8 lb mono. I also have a baitcasting reel with 20lb power pro that I usually use for bass. I’m going to be mainly jigging, lindy rigging, using slip bobbers, and throwing cranks/swim baits. I can’t troll.

I guess I’m mainly concerned with what types of line I should be using for those different presentations and if practically, I should be picking up more rods/reels (always dangerous!) Thanks for your help.

mono line has a lot of stretch and superline has no stretch so they are used for different applications. the best thing about power pro and fireline is that it has smaller diameter than mono. for instance 80 lb power pro has diameter of 17 lb. mono so u can use stronger line and still get down to the bottom. that’s the other advantage i like with jig fishing in current is using fireline to cut thru the current better. i also like easy visable line for jigging. for rigging i use mono as with long line trolling so the line helps set the hook with the bend of the rod. i hope some of this info helps u out.

I use spinning reels on my walleye rigs, I would keep the 6 lb set up and replace the 8 lb mono with a 8 lb fireline. Use the mono rig for bobber fishing and the fireline rig for lindy rigging and even trolling rapalas.

This would be a great place to start.
