Question for the Blade Bait Users

Up to a couple of weeks ago I have never used blade baits much at all, after reading posts about using the St.Croix MLXF rod for them I have been out with one of my MLXF practicing and learning the feel and trying to dial in the technique.

My question is …. Do you use them year around?, Is there a particular time of the year they shine.

What is your favorite technique to use them? pitching, casting ,vertical jigging, dragging or all.

I mainly fish from pool 4 on down to pool 6.

Thanks for your advice and opinions in advance

My favorite is pitching and casting. Something about that “thump” out away from the boat with the 6’9″ st croix MXLF Extreme is very exciting, even theraputic for me.

You can catch fish all year on blades, I have even caught some walleyes on blades on Mille Lacs mid summer, so these baits work in other places besides moving water.

The 69 MLXF or LXS70 MLF are excellent rods, paired with 6# BRAID for casting
7/64, 1/8 or 1/4 oz blades… also the 7’1″ Loomis MLXF, 732 Powell, Fenwick Elite Tech etc…I do not advise casting these light tipped rods with heavier blades.

Vertical jigging, to me, entails 3/8 thru 1 oz blades worked vertically on a shorter, stiffer rod like a 63MXF, with 8# braid. In spring or fall you will see lots of anchored or drifting boats working those bigger blades in deeper water for Sauger.

I have to admit, once the water warmed, I use to put blades on the back burner. Big mistake! Being more aggressive while ripping-pumping these baits in front of structure relating walleyes can get you doubled over in a heartbeat.

Calvin was a little too humble in his response also, Many times I have re-read his detailed article Calvins blade bait article

Used them again today on the river and picked up a couple of nice fish. Rite now I have been slow working them across the face of dams. Letting them touch bottom and then slow pick them up about 6″s and move them. I would be willing to work them a little more aggressively if I thought the fish where a little more aggressive now.

Nailed a huge flat head today on one to. This thing must of been 30 pounds. Came to the boat letting me think he was a long then the line started singing off the reel. Thought for sure he was going to spool me. Must of been close to 4′. Took a photo but ended up with nothing on the camera. Got some nice road rash on my hand.

Not to HighJack here but… Does anyone know where a guy could get some 1/16 or 1/8 ounce size blade baits? I would like to run some shallow water with them snap jigging and havent found anyone to have them this light. Thanks in advance!
