Rod holders

Ok, just spooled up two new rods/reels with leadcore (thanks to those with the replies). This is all new to me….

Now, can anyone give their opinions on rod holders? I think I would prefer to mount on the side, rather than the gunnel due to the boat cover. Would like to know what everyone else is using and how you like them – durability, ease of use, etc.

Also, if I mount on the side, how long of a screw should I be using? It would look tacky having screws coming out the side of the boat

    Thanks

What kind of boat do you have? I use both Scottys and Ram brand rod holders.

On my old lund, I installed the Ranger style rails. My only regret is that I didn’t go bigger and do it sooner. The flexibility rails allow you is tremendous. You can mount accessories on them, move the accessories, etc. Go rails, you won’t regret it.

Then look into the Cannon rod holders. I’ve got Cannons on my boat and I really like them. Dean is running the Cannons as well.

Sorry, didn’t see the boat cover comment. Still look into the Cannons.

I have a ’09 Alumacraft Navigator. I am not opposed to mounting on top, just concerned about the cover. Side mount comes to mind. Having said that, I assume I would need extensions?

I think there could be a dedicated section on IDO regarding this topic

Looked online at the Scotty’s holders. Specifically the mounting options. The flat mount would work just fine. It’s flush with the gunnel and wouldn’t interfere with the boat cover.

Like I stated a few posts up, I have the Alumacraft Navigator. I should be able to drill a hole on top of the gunnel to allow this mount to fit. If I am wrong, please let me know.

On Scotty’s website, it would be mount number 244L.

I have a Tracker, deep V, 16′. I preferred the RAM mounts & rod holders with the mounting brackets on the inside of the gunnels. Did not want to drill holes in the gunnels for the flush mounts and kept the tops of the gunnels clear and clean this way.

Nice thing about the Lund Sportrac, its built in and removable…

Biggest thing is a sturdy mount. Just make sure your rod isn’t gonna get ripped from the holder and/or the holder ripped from the boat.

i have a navigator 175 i put in 8 scotty flush mounts on top of gunnel. Very clean looking and nothing gets caught on them.Gunnel is narrow so i made up a fixture to drill and tap 4 holes and and drill 1 1/4 hole in the center. will post pics later.

I ran RAM flush mounts on my ’07 Navigator and they worked pretty slick. I’m currently using Scotty rod holders on my Yar-Craft and they work excellent too. It’s personal preference…

Dang strong! Folbe rod holders were designed for Salmon and White Sturgeon of Oregon.

Just pick it up and reel! Keeps your rod inside the boat!

More money? Slightly, but ask anyone that’s used them. They are great!

Dean at Everts is the only one that carries them around here that I’m aware of.

Check them out before you buy…and you decide!

    Mugs,

I run a Navigator and put 3 foot rails on the back, and did flush mount RAM mounts on the bow. Not sure what you have for a cover, so don’t know if you have the room, but I love having rails. I have four bases on each side on the back rails. If you can fit rails under your cover, that’s the way I would go. You can kind of see them in the attached picture before I put any bases on them.

The best laid plans of drilling holes for rod holders and or accessories has bit me in the butt more than once.

I highly recomend you get the rails for your rod holders.Every boat and person has a bit of a different set-up as to how & what they fish.A misplaced rod holder location can be very frustrating. Every rod holder has different pros & cons,so knowing more about how & where you fish might make a difference on which unit might work a bit better for your purpose. Good luck!

    I resemble that!

People ask me why I have two rod holders on the same side about two feet apart.

I tell them ones for walleye fishing and the other is for cats.
