Thanks for the practical advice – sounds like a good approach. How many colors should fit on a 27 sized spool? I’d like to be able to get down to 25′ (maybe 30). I’m thinking the 27′ might be a little boarder line, but I like it’s smaller size.

A 27 will hold 8 colors providing the right amount of backing is on. You will need +/-6 colors for 30 feet depending on your speed.

Never fished with a 27 (for lead, anyway — great longline reels!!), but I never would have guessed it would hold 8 colors… Is that with very minimal backing?? 27lb leadcore?

I run the 47’s, but I have lots of backing for salmon. For my full core reels, I also have lots of backing, but run 57’s. (big suckers)

47’s would be pretty worry free as you could put enough backing (25 lb mono or 30 lb pp) on it to get you out if a snag if/when you need to, but maybe 27’s will be worth a shot if you can get 6-8 colors on it with a little backing.

    NC –

Because those reels are generally dedicated for salmon fishing. And when we salmon fish, we usually let out all of our lead, let out some more backing, then attach the backing to a planer board, and get the line away from the boat/riggers, etc… We need that many different setups to be able to switch things up and target different depths. We never attach leadcore to a planer board release, unless you want broken lead.

To add confusion, we oftentimes run 2 colors off of a downrigger. Called an SWR, or secret weapon rig…

Joel — BTW, you should run full cores!!! We usually kick on full cores!

    Yup. What he said!

I know we should run full core and maybe even have a rod with double core ready to go but I’ve never got around to purchasing the setup for that. Maybe this year.

57 works great for a full core, not sure if a double core would fit?

    Regarding double cores… I don’t blame you!

I haven’t ran double core yet, either… I can’ imagine running 50-100′ of leader, TWO HUNDRED YARDS of leadcore plus backing… Get a 20 lb king, you easily have a 45 minute fight on your hands!! Plus better get away from any other boats, or you’ll lose all that core in a hurry…
