What’s your favorite jig and why?

I have several jigs for different circumstances. I like fin-tech for rivers and drifting (stand up jigs) round head jigs for vertical jigging, weedless for weeds, etc.

What brand do you use most often? what is your favorite color and what do you base your jig selection on?

just wondering. I seem to gravitate my jig to a black head with a white eyeball and red dot in the eye. I use this on the Big Chip with good success.

Fuzz-E-Grub is my all around standby jig…however, I like the Draggin jigs for timber fishing and am going to be trying some of the Fin-Tech jigs this summer.

For pitching plastics, crawlers… or even minnows there’s only one jig I use and have used the same jig for going on 10 years now. H2O Precision Heads.

    I’ve gotta echo James here…

Picking a single jig? Ask anyone that’s fished with me, 95% of the time I’ve got a B-Fish-N-Tackle regular unpainted lead head jig tied on.

    Why? Simply because they work

But really, B-fish offers in a wide variety of jigs in many weights and colors that other manufacturers seem to sometimes overlook. While primarily fishing the river, finding the correct jig weight is crucial.

Also, in addition to jig weight, hook size is another barrier the B-Fish’s H20 jig has well overcome. It’s tough to find a 1/16oz and 3/32oz jig that has a hook well suited for a walleye and not a 4” sunfish, but they’ve got it

I carry a lot of different jig styles and will switch up often to match a particular presentation.

For dragging plastic or live bait in areas of heavy cover (rock or wood), it’s hard to beat a Draggin’ Jig. You can find Draggin’ Jigs here.

For pitching or dragging in low-snag areas, Precision Heads are a great choice.

For vertical jigging in clear water, it’s hard to beat a glitter jig. These jigs in silver and gold in 3/8 are my go-to jigs for this application.

For those days when no bait is required, hair jigs spend a lot of time at the end of my line. These are some of my favorites.

    So many jigs….so little time!

I used to have hundreds of jigs of many makes but gave them away and replaced them with H2O precision and dragging jigs. I haven’t regretted my decision once in the last 8 years. I especially like the keeper and the stamped weight on the back of them. Sour apple, non painted, black, and gold glitter are my favorites but I have a few others I also like.

Its hard to beat the H2O jigs for the river fishing I do. The metal bait keepers are great for plastics and live bait. Would never go back to lead bait keepers.

Hook size on the H2o is fantastic also. The variety of sizes cant be beat either. These jigs account for at least half of all the walleyes I catch every year.

I make all my own jigs. Do-it mold that is most similar to what I want, then a dremel tool to modify it for the hook style I want. For the amount of large plastics I use, you can’t beat the Gamakatsu EWG jig hooks. I also like to drag more jigs and found a 28 degree or 60 degree eyelet gives me more of the presentation I like.

Just another point to the “why” part of the post. I cant stress enough of the correct jig weight for your day on the water. “Tweener” sizes like 3/32 3/16 5/16 th can make a HUGE difference in your success or lack there of.

I do love BfishN jigs, but I still gotta throw my props to Hutch. His glitter jigs are just the cat’s meow. As Dean had previously mentioned, size is crucial and he has all the odd ballers. 3/32 is one of my favorites! But yeah, I think it’s fishing the propper weight more so than the jig head you fish with. I have a lot of plain unpainted roundball 1/4, 1/8th, and 1/16th that catch a lot of fish, but I gotta tip my hat to the guys who make those gap weights.

I love the Precision jigs and the Draggin Jigs. My only issue is that the keeper is on the bottom of a Precision Jig. Why not put it on top like the Draggin jig? Having the keeper on the bottom is a zebra muscle magnet when using a leech. I love the tweener sizes but I wish they would switch the keeper around.

I use a lot of the Hutch jigs also, but none seem to have the long shank I like so I smelt my own also.

I’ll use the Hutch with plastic and prefer the longer shank ones with live bait.

the only problems i have with the bfishin jigs is that they dont sell them in SE WI. and if i use the credit card again I will be moving in with one of you guys.
2ndly, the bait keeper is on the bottom and that is just a magnet for weeds, zebras, etc. should be on the top of the jig.

who is Hutch and where can i see his jigs or paint jobs?
In wisconsin, we had the annual rules and regs meeting on monday and it was voted unanimously to phase out lead over the next few years. so buying a bunch of lead jigs would not be my best bet right now.

as for the in between sizes: well, i guess i’ve never really had any reason to want or need them.
I fish tournaments and do fairly well.
the fish dont know if i am using the between sizes so why should i care and buy a kit with them in there?

the precision kit should have more options such as 1/8, 3/16,1/4,3/8. to go to a /32 is a little overboard in my thoughts. I think the shape and action put on with a jig is more important than the weight at these size and weights.

    just my $.02 worth

    Hot Tamale,

The in-between sizes are important to. To go from a 1/8oz to a 1/4oz is a HUGE difference. On the river here in Oshkosh, if you cast and 1/8oz in front of you it will be under the boat before it hits bottom. If you cast a 1/4oz it will fall into every single hole and get snagged. These areas are filled with debris and rebar so if your jig goes in it will not come out. Also the hook is a size larger on the 1/4oz which causes problems in a snag infested area. The 3/16oz glides right over and rarely do I lose jigs. The fall on a tight line is slower as well which I believe triggers more bites.

I will agree that most of the time it is pointless but there are times where a tweener can make a huge diffence.

BTW, Hutch is the man. His jigs are awesome and he is just an overall great guy. If you order any from him let him know Rich Stadler says hi.
