The BEST Walleye Boat

Back in the ’80’s, Bob Propst was one of the best walleye anglers in the world. He claimed that the pontoon boat was “the best walleye boat.” Can you imagine 200 pontoons lined up for a shotgun start at a walleye tournament?!
What is the best walleye boat and why?

1988 Lund Tyee. My neibor on the pond has 2 150’s on his pontoon. It’s the first pontoon I have ever seen on plane.

I’d say that depends on the bodies of water you fish and your style of fishing. I fish in a lot of different boats and get a pretty good idea of what’s out there each new season. Over this last year I have had a chance to fish out of Ben Garver’s Skeeter Tiller several times and I have fallen in love. That thing is a walleye machine. The ride is incredible but I think the thing I like most is how much room there is in this boat. And Ben figured out how to solve the lack of windshield by using a Save Phace face mask and is kind enough to supply one to his partner as well.

That boat is probably the best walleye boat I have been in for a while.

The resort I stay at on Vermilion has a pontoon with a 300 Suzuki, that thing flys. I like the Skeeters and Tuffys myself. Of course hard to beat a 620 Ranger.

This is like asking what is the best walleye rod or best fishing lure. It all depends on where and how you are fishing. Look at what type of fishing you like to do. Look at the body of water you like to fish and find the boat that works best on it.

My Navigator works well on the river. Lots of space in the boat for pitching jigs. Wide transom area for fishing and reeling in fish. Most of our fishing on the river is done of the back end of the boat.

If I fished larger bodies of water like Mille Lacs my boat would be gone in a heart beat and most likely traded for a heavier fiber glass boat.

X2 Mike…I have a single bubble 1750 Crestliner FishHawk. I fish/guide both Walleye/Bass and the spacious front deck allows two fishermen up front to cast shoreline.
If I won the lottery I’d look hard at the new WX 1950 Skeeter

    The Ultimate Fishing boat

I did see a pontoon at the sports show a few years back that had 3 200 Mercury’s hanging off the back, said it was clocked as a World record at 88.1 MPH.

The best walleye boat is whatever boat gets you on the water.

I would have to say a 14 foot mirrocraft with a 6 horse merc is the best walleye boat.

You guys nailed it. I have a Lund Predator, that I bought NEW in 1988, with a 60 tiller. I haven’t had boat payments for 20 years. It runs great. I’ve caught tons of walleyes in that boat over the years. Its my opinion, because of the reasons you guys gave, its the best walleye boat out there for me.

    Great replies, gentlemen.

The boat is only as good as the angler who understands how to control it in various conditions.

    Pools 7, 8 and 9 would be a 14-16ft Flat with CG/semi v front end and a 25-40hp out board.

I’m with Bret on this one. I can get mine back into places that others fear to tread where the fish are big and wild.

Darn….I missed by it by 1 ft and 10hp……

With a tiller I agree with Bret 100%………I have a console so minus 20 points for that…

While I’ve had a few chances to walk away from her and take someone else to the dance, I just can’t bring myself to let her go.

Best fishing boat I had was a 16′ Fisher SV-3 with a 75 three cylinder Evinrude on it, big front and rear platforms, you could troll with the 75 and a minnkota on the front made jigging easy.

Now at age 62 the 185 Tournament Sport I have is not quite a nice fishing wise in some regards, but its loaded with storage, has a top, windshield and high sides and much more comfortable…yup
