On the LOW walleye episode James mentioned that in the summer generally you would find larger walleyes in the main lake section while the eaters would tend to be in in the island areas. Am curious as to why this happens, what advantage do main lake basins offer larger walleyes?

    Great shows!

Off the top of my head I would say that the schools of big oily baitfish are out in the basins and the big girls follow them around.

    Bart,
Alot of the forage fish that the larger walleyes are following in the summer months are palegic(sp)feeders. There is a huge amount of emerald shiners as well as ciscoes that have grown by that time to a perferred size. I fish LOW alot in july and august and have always caught big walleyes trolling crankbaits in open water. There are large fish around reefs but number wise a majority are suspended in the big traverse bay section. Find the bait fish find the walleyes. I look at it like this. If someone said we could eat 1 prime rib(shiners, ciscoes) or 10 party weiners(bugs etc.) what would we do ?? Best of luck.
