Pool 4 Bite

OK guys, I didn’t know which forum to post this, so I’m trying this one. I just got done watching The Next Bite. They were fishing near pool 4 in late December. I don’t ice fish, so I NEED to get out soon. I live near Green Bay, WI. How is the fishing going up there right now? When does it start getting good? When does it start getting crowded? I’ve fished pool 4 before, but not up that far. I have fished pool 9 & 10 many times, so I am very familiar with the Mississippi. I love to vertical jig and pitch jigs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Do you prefer live bait or plastics this time of year? What are all the ramps that are open now?

Since I live a ways away, I need to make the trip worth my time. I think we’re looking at another month or so before we have open water around here. I don’t think I can wait that long.

Thanks guys for any info you can give.

Plastics! It is to hard on your hands otherwise. The ramps are open every day of the year at Evert’s. When you get there all you have to do is check in at the bait shop. They have the most up to date info. Look at what baits and colors are laying on the counter.

Don’t be afraid to stay past dusk!

When ever the weather gets nice you will see a marked pick up in boat activity. When it gets warmer, don’t get stuck at the dam.

    Good Luck,

Call Dean at Evrets resort. He’ll give you the straight Poop! Ask him if the ramps are open …..He’ll love ya for it. Plastics might be the most widly used product on pool 4. As far as time for the bite……..Now through May. Call Dean….Nicest guy youll talk to.

    Hi Mark!
I live north of you in Iron Mountain…My best advice is to do a search here for Pool 4 in the reports forum. I have been going for the past 10 years in March, April, Oct, and Nov.
The weather, river flow/clarity, water temps etc… can alter the bite for any day or time of the year. Right now is a good bite and it really goes pretty much from mid October through late April below the Dam to Lake Pepin.
Boat traffic will start to pick up next month and peak in April during the spawning migration…On April weekends there can be 300+ boats within 1/2 mile of the dam.
Available lodging at Everts gets slim and none about mid March through April so a call there is a good idea, unless you stay at a motel some miles away. Staying at Everts is a definite plus in my book!

That is the running joke at Everts. The other landings (I’ve heard rumors there are more than at Everts ) are all froze in this time of year. Dean keeps them sanded and salted to ensure they are always open.

    Here’s the Everts website http://www.EvertsFishingResort.com .

I just left there at 9 this morning.

There’s a fantastic plastic bite going on at dusk or if you are interested in eater size fish, the deeper water will give you a limit too. It’s very important to understand if your fishing water deeper that 25 feet that you keep what you catch. Studies have show that most will die when caught from that depth and deeper.

If you plan on staying a few days, you will be eating fish and can take some home too…along with getting your open water itch scratched.

PS I doesn’t hurt to bring along some homemade baked goods as a bribe either.

    Mark,

I’d probably take you up there if you promise to leave those pesky Stadlers at home.

Gordon’s Bay landing below Lock 9 is still frozen good. There were guys out on the ice jigging yet yesterday.

Cant believe no one had mentioned this yet. Dean is the best at predicting what the bite will be like in the future. Depth, color, presentation no problem for him. The farther out in the future the better. Right Dean?

    Sorry to hijack your post.

Thanks guys for all the great advice. Hoping to get up there in the next couple weeks or so. I have to help my dealer with a boat show towards the end of February, but hopefully after that.

I’ve heard rumors to bring cookies when I visit Dean for the best advice. Guess I’ll have to get the wife to do a little cooking.

Marshall, I doubt the Stadler’s will be tagging along. Rich is pretty busy this time of year and I know he has Spring Valley coming up soon as well. Boy, I miss that tournament. New house is priority one for this year. Tournaments are slowly taking more of back seat. It’s much more fun sharing info with people and just having fun. Plus the kids are getting old enough to tag along as well. Hoping to get my son his first walleye this year.

Thanks again guys and maybe I’ll see you up there. I’ll probably have the only Skeeter with a Verado on it. Feel free to say hi. I like meeting new people.

    Best of luck this year!

I don’t know Mark well enough to subject him to that. What has he ever done to me?
