P4 Fri THE BIG CHEW

It started with Dean letting me know my rod he had sent in to St.Croix was in. A person can really appreciate the customer service relationship Dean has with his customers & St.Croix.A big thanks again Dean!

With forcasted temps in the mid to upper 20’s along with seeing some of the reports coming in on P4 as well as not being in my boat for a couple weeks I couldnt let this prime opportunity to get my string stretched pass me up.On this particular outing I was definately not going to be dissapointed.
I talked to a couple other friends & IDO members whom I had shared open seats with on prior visits to see if they wanted to get out for a few hours.Coming up empty I dropped a late notice open seat post figuring I can either go alone or possibly have someone to converse with also sharing experiences & possibly making friendships for many future outings which I have done here numerous times.

I arrived at Everts just before 10am to begin reloading the boat with gear as it had almost all been removed to store it for the winter months.A brief visit with Hutch whom was gearing up as well to go out with a couple guests. Those who know him or some of those that dont should know of his works of art he has on display in Everts baitshop. Those lures he paints are simply amazing. Talk about having a golden touch with a airbrush.Although I havent done so before I will be sure to send a few lures off for him to give that special touch to.A visit with Dean to pick up my new rod holding a large box of cookies in hand to kick off the holiday spirit is in order. Taking note of anything new on shelves, counter & whats on desk in my book is a must. Im never sure what I might see new or add to the never ending supply of tackle one might need for a days outing. When does a person ever have too much tackle? After visiting Dean for over an hour & picking up a few misc.items & having him spool a couple reels up with Cortland line which I will say from my brief experience using it on my jig sticks performed flawlessly!

Its time to hit the water as its now past 11am. I backed down the ramps to unload which are in great shape unhook all straps, start motor & begin to try to back off trailer. Hmmmmm not moving? Seems the boat is a bit froze to the bunks of trailer from last outing. This is the time of year when a person can be glad its not crazy busy as I sat for nearly 15 mins letting boat release from trailer.I had a couple other people ask if I might need help but this is something that just takes time. A person can genuinely appreciate the offer of help from others.Another thanks goes out to those who offer help to others! Finally get unloaded begin to pull up ramp to park & phone is ringing.Wouldnt you know the damn thing is buried under the exterior layer of clothing.A quick return call & a couple guests ,Chaz & Brittany,I had out on a previous trip said they would like to join me & could be at the resort at 1pm & its now 11:40.
My decision was made at that point on what methods & areas I would like to target before & after they arrive.I went out staying within eye range of resort deciding to go primarly verticle-slow dragging trying out the new Cortland line & the Miller rigs Dean had set me up with.Watching electronics I noticed a good sized group of fish, dropped a line down & I was greated almost immediately with a junior whisker fish. Not quite what I was looking for but it stretched the line nicely just the same. There was a good group of fish marking in the area I was working but getting them to commit to my offerings along with large chunks of ice floating about, making it tough to present my lures as needed.I spent just over 1hr running jigs knowing fish can be caught in this area but 2 small Saugers & 1 Fiddler Cat isnt enough to keep my interest here.Time to go back to pick up my company Chaz & Brittany for the afternoon.Stopping again at the resort to chat with Dean & Jason H. briefly which seemed to help keying in on colors to use while Chaz & Brittany shared a couple treats Dean had received earlier & noting they were diminishing rather quickly.

We got back on the water around 1:15pm deciding I needed to have more current flow to possibly find more active fish. With trolling rods & 3-way rigs being a very productive method for my boat & wanting guests to hopefully catch fish I found it time to put jig sticks away & give the 3-way rigs with cranks a thorough try.I had 3 rods rigged 2 rods being loaded heavy 4oz.with single rap rigs from another outing figuring we could easily pull 4 without problems. We hardly had 2 lines out & it was game on!Started moving very slow under .5mph sometimes just hovering to stay over fish figuring they wouldnt want to exert alot of energy or chase lures down as the water temps were just over 35 deg.I found that once you found a good group of active fish which seemed to be primarily on a depth break along with a productive current seam or break you could have multiple fish loading up rods moving along very fast at 1+mph upstream & pushing 2mph downstream. This can seem fast but if the fish are feeding aggresively they will commit with authority! I actually think our better fish came from the downstream or faster approach.Which can also make you think a smaller sized fish seem much larger when they put the on your offering. After figuring lure colors, style, areas & speed out while having 2,3,or possibly 4 fish on at 1 time along with boating over 50 fish I completely lost count on how many were boated in 3.5 hrs.I could say conservatively 75 possibly 100. Bright colors seemed to perform best on this day but I will generally keep a neutral light colored or natural colored lure out to keep the fish honest.Short droppers 8″-12″ with a 36″-40″ leader seemed to work best. The fish we did get were not huge average around 14″ largest pushing 19″ with a mix of eyes & sauger. What they didnt make up for in size they definately made it up in volume. We all came home with a nice limit of a mix of Sauger & eyes ave about 15″-16″.I was glad to share this day on the water with Chaz & Brittany & hope to be able to do it again. Now the boat is temporarily getting put to rest as the ice fishing season has begun. But after seeing a couple other good reports from others & if temps are favorable I will most likely need an open water fix! Open Seat anyone?

If you are just sitting there reading this & are on the fence about going out to P4.Time a wasting as the fish seem to be on THE BIG CHEW! Best of luck fishing all! WHITE TIP

    Whiskers!! Someone mention whiskers!?

Nice report Mr Whisker Tip…err White Tip!

I was out with the camera today. There were fish everywhere but MANY more of the currant seams. I still don’t know how a person can drop a hook down and not snag a fish each time. Truly amazing!

Looks like your fish were released in Crisco Bay!

I sure wish I hadnt been 1/2 way to Wapogasset when you called but then again the ice in the area I wanted to fish sucked so bad I didnt even stay so I should have turned around and went open water fishing.

Looks and reads like you had a good day fishing and what a great day to be on the water

I hit the water today also with a friend (whitetailaddict) and his father, and what a day it was. We boated about 140-150 fish for the day. Only one person kept track of their fish, and they had 54 fish. The ticket seemed to by small paddle tails, anything with a blue tint. We were vertical all day in 20-30 feet of water. Nothing big for the day, but we had many triples and doubles. All and all a wonderful day on the water!! This place IS truly amazing.

They were going to be part of our dinner last night! But someone didnt return home early enough. Which worked out rather well as my FW sister came to stay for the weekend & brought 3 freshly made pizzas over which allowed me more time to clean fish & reorganize my sanity errr I meant boat & gear.FW & sister made fish, frys, shrooms & curds for dinner this eve.Along with a few hundred freshly baked goods throughout the day. Which gave me the green light to get out fishing again. Chad glad to see you were able to put down on a few fishies. Dean you are right on with the Awesome day for fish, friends & baked goodies which I hope to do again soon. Who knows where the next outing might take me? Quite possibly Ice-Ice baby as the boat is all emptied out again. This switching out of ice gear in Suburban to open water gear reload in boat & cleanup is alot of work! I will definately be watching the weather for the possibility of another P4 adventure. Until then have a Happy Holiday.

Great report. Sounds like the bite is HOT! Hopefully the mild temps can hang around for a bit. My brother want me to take him out when he comes up New Years weekend. That would be a good start to a new year!

Jessy, take 2 or 3 pacs of what I call the BK Semi Pro Blue Paddletails and hide them for me. I hope to get out with a rod next week end.

I’m thinking the Super Doo’s should be kicking in by now too and since red neck isn’t around…<snicker>

Sigh, so many places to fish…so little time. Thanks for getting me all wound up White Tip!

There are a few colors of lures I think is a must have for the river.Blue,Chartruse,Orange,Gold,Purple,Black & White.Mix & match them.Color patterns can change throughout the day depending on light penetration for depth you are fishing.I did note a few newer lures in the shop with those color variations. Some having 3 or 4 of those colors applied.I did walk out with a handfull or 2 of lures but didnt get the chance to put them all through the courses yet. Next time Im pretty sure there might be a few other new lure color combinations I will stumble across that have the certain curb appeal again. Dean does a nice job keeping everyone on the edge of what might be coming out next helping to put more fish in the boat.
Now Im getting pumped for another visit allready. Good luck out there guys. Bk I will be watching for another vid clip.

I always find it amazing how much color preference can change day to day, and even hour to hour. There were stretches yesterday that one color would outshine everything else, and the next drift it would not even get bit. I never used to switch colors often enough, but I am learning!!

Makes a person wonder at times how you cant catch fish! Thanks for sharing. That gets me stoked up for possibly another adventure on P4! Now if mother nature will cooperate. BK I know you are a cat guy,but did you fish or just scout? If you dont want to mention out loud thats ok.I will forgive you.

Everyone please close your eyes for a second!!
    Hey BK
First time I have ever used that one I think.
Sounds like a great trip—I have had a few of them this time of year and it makes it extra special because there are no crowds to negotiate around. I remember one December day when it was 49 minutes from the time we left Evert’s until we got back and in that time we got our limits and threw back several 19+ inchers. Once you hit a bite like that the ice fishing gear gets permanently retired or at least mine did. If I had the time I’m sure Redneckcracker is killing them right now and I am betting Dean is sold out as usual. Unfortunetely South Dakota is calling and I am headed that way in a day or so again. One of these days I’ll drag myself down there again—if I can figure out a day when BK isn’t there. The guy is wearing way too much pink lately and is starting to scare me

No, everyone I spoke with were skunked (and I saw the fish fleeing the area on camera) using the Redneckcracker.

Multiple limits were caught and released using the BK Semi Pro Blue paddletail. Ask anyone that had fish.

Last I heard RDC was being discontinued as walleye bait but there were plans of reintroducing it as the newest line of Mud Puppy bait. Hey! It’s good for something.

White Tip, I didn’t have a rod with me, just the camera.

Where that picture was taken, I was further up stream than anyone, but yet in shallower water than most. That was just a snap shot of one area…wait until the movie is released!

Like I told you in a previous post BK—-the only reason anyone buys the BK Semi Crow Blue is for medicinal purposes. A couple of the regulars were talking in the bait shop one day and mentioned they couldn’t even catch cold using your bait so guys buy them and keep them in their pockets to ward off colds
Redneckcracker is the hottest bait out there—even I can catch fish on them—-argue that point

Has anyone tried running shallow shad raps on 3 ways like this? I was wondering if they would work well rigged tandem also.

SSR’s at times will work well. What I didnt mention is we did run a Shallow X-rap shad as well. I tend not to run tandem (cranks) much myself as I would much rather loose 1 lure than 2 if or when you get hung up. Just 1 mans opinion or observation & $.02 worth.

I allmost forgot to add.Welcome to the posting side of IDO!

Thanks for the welcome and all the info. I have been reading a lot here and hope many of the same techniques work on the Fox and Wolf.

Thinking thats the area these type or style rigs were somewhat originated. Originally called Wolf River rigs – 3-way swivel with bell sinker dropper primarily used with live bait, fishing in heavier current. They seemed to have expanded their applications for many other regions & lure types or styles. There are almost endless possibilities of areas to use them along with different methods & applications in which you can attach to the business end to help put fish in the boat. Dont be afraid to be creative on the business end.
