My wife and I just spent a week with good friends Jill and Dan Schafer at Cygnet Lake Camp in Ontario Canada. As some of you know, I’m a self proclaimed bass guy and I was heading into a whole new world of walleye fishing. Since the start of the Skeeter Boat Center I have had the great opportunity to fish with some of the great IDO guys like Jason Halfen, Eric Rehberg, and Dean Marshall. I know fishing with the greats does not make me great and in fact I believe when I’m in the boat with these guys I have a way of jinxing the boat from catching any big walleyes. I guess once a bass guy always a bass guy. With that being said, a bad day of fishin is better then a good day at work.
Trisha and my day started early Saturday morning with me leaving to fish a WTC outing on Chetek. After a middle of the pack finish and switching from a bass fishin mind set to walleyes, it was the start of a 500 mile trip north to Cygnet Lake. Trish is not much of a night driver and with me getting up at 4am we made it to International Falls and decided to stop for a few hours for a rest. After a short knap in a motel it was time to cross the boarder. With passports in hand it was smooth sailing and we were headed north on 71 to Cygnet Lake Camp. When we arrived we were greeted by both Dan & Jill and from that minute until the time we left, Trisha and I both felt like we were now part of the Cygnet Lake family.
We were showed to our cabin which soon became home for the week. I can only say one thing about the accommodations, GREAT with a view. Pictures are enclosed. After getting settled in, I was looking forward to getting on the lake. After a boat tour of the lake from another friend Boar who was also spending a the week at Cygnet with his wife Bucky. Boar in a regular and a great helper to Dan & Jill. In fact he had been at camp the week prior working on some new bush lake landings. I quickly settled in and it was off to a great week of fishing.
I believe it was Wednesday and Dan had asked if we would like to try the Winnipeg river for a new adventure. We loaded up our boat along with Dan’s brother Rick, his son in-law, and a friend, we all head for a few hours on the river. Fishing was a little slow but we were on an adventure with a view and Trish did catch her biggest smallie.
On Thursday we decided after a morning of fishin on Cygnet Lake that we would spend the day on 4 wheelers checking out the bush. From the smile on Trisha face, I knew she was enjoying the ride. We stopped at the BFR and one of the newest bush landings Boar had worked on the week prior. The scenery was breath taking.
After our day on the wheelers, we spent the remainder of our time catchin walleyes on Cygnet Lake. I’m not sure what day it was, but Trisha asked if the ring worms Dean had sent with us would work because I think she was getting tired of baiting the hook. As you can see from one of the pictures, ring worms do work on Cygnet Lake.
To sum our trip up, I have to say that it was one of the most relaxing vacations I can remember. With the loss of cell phone reception and no internet, a person quickly finds ways to enjoy the great outdoors. Not to mention how good fresh walleye tasted everyday coming out of 62 degree water temps.
Thanks Dan & Jill for a week to remember. Trisha and I would highly recommend this camp and if there are any question I would be glad to help answer them.
Also, thanks to friend Boar for putting the trip together.
I hope all enjoy the weekend and the rest of the summer.
Dan
