Pool 3 Report

I’ve never given a report so be gentle.

I decided at the last minute on Tuesday to head out to pool 3 for a couple of hours of chasing eyes on the wing dams. I launched in Prescott and headed south.

I was fishing wing dams “dragging” jigs. Depending on the flow I was using ¼ or 3/16 oz jigs tipped with either a ½ night crawler or a jumbo leech. I didn’t see a difference in bait choice as long and I got it in front of their face. And since I had limited time I only had the chance to fish 2 wing dams.

In less than two hours of fishing I ended up with 8 walleyes. 5 were between 16 and 20 inches and a 24, 25, and 26 incher (5, 6, & 7 pounds). You can trust me on the sizes. I’m a fisherman. I also nailed a 7# sheepie that looked like it was about to bust. I was careful to point the business end away from me as I unhooked it and thanks for the warning James. I don’t think anyone has forgotten that tip.

Sorry no pics, so no proof, but I was in such a hurry to get out I left the camera and my cell phone at home. My thinking is that we need a roving camera man or woman to follow us around since many of us seem to fish alone and can’t take good pictures.

I was really surprised at the lack of boat traffic including both fisherman and the pleasure cruisers, but I’m not one to complain on that point.

Btw…I’m mainly a troller and haven’t really been a jigger or done much wing dam fishing, but after Tuesday evening that may change.

You must be mistaking. Fish like that and with the boat traffic so low, you have to be talking about Lake Pepin!

    Nice report to!

Good report Jeff. Wing dam fishing can be a blast this time of year. They sure put up a good fight when they come up into the current. Hope to see you down there one of these days!

a question regarding dragging the wingdams. i typically just anchor and pitch my presentation to the face of the dam.

are you actually dragging across the face of the dam with your electric motor? or are you just dragging up and downstream along the tips of the dams?

This is my first year fishing wing dams, but what worked this time for me was anchoring upstream, a bit off the end of the wing dam and cast the jig to the front off the wing dam and lifting the jig just enough for it to swing with the current across the face and down the end of the wing dam. I think there is slack water not only in the front and back of the wing dam, but also off the end of the wing dam that the walleyes lay in waiting. Just a guess though.I owe a lot of this years success to this website and the folks on it though.

Jeff, You hit the nail on the head buddy. In the conditions we have now the technique you described will put alot of walleye in the boat. Good luck on the river.
