I don’t have the trolling bible in front of me at this time but, you can always run in line weights to get your extra depth if that helps you.

The depths reached on various line diameters are very general but they’ll get you in the ballpark.

    On 10# diameter line they’ll dive to 5 – 6 feet.

On 6# diamter line you can get them out to 9′.

To hit 12′ of water you’ll need to run 2-3# diameter braid… and a lot of line.

You might be better served to use leadcore. If there’s any snags to be found you’ll be loosing a lot of baits on 2 – 3 # braid.

That will be tough to do. Any reason not to step to a #7?

Guys u ever pull cranks on bottom bouncers. The fish are just stacked in 20 foot of water. Now its just a matter of getting down to them. Would we be better off live bait rigging them? The sonar right now is just lite up with arcs for about a 100 yard stretch. Any ideas how to get down to these fish?

With 8# fireline and 125′ of line out, 10′ seems to be about thye limit of a #5 Shad Rap.

    For eyes in 20’…..leadcore.

That’s the problem. We don’t have leadcore? Live bait rig them?

#9 shads or #7’s with a snap weight will get down there. Or live bait. If you do go the bottom bouncer option, you’ll want to use stick baits.

Six pound mono with 3-4 split shot about 3 feet in front of the rap and a ton of line out will get you down 12 feet.

what i like to do is run a 3/4 to 1 oz bottom bouncer with gold spinner blade and a single hook with a leech or the same set up with a double hook for worms. To help keep the crawlers off the bottom i inject air in then with a small needle. U want the line at a 30 or 45 degree angle and just so u can feel the bouncer tap the bottom from time to time. trolling speed any where from .05 to 1.3 mph.

Use a bigger bouncer if you are going to be running in 20 feet. With only a half oz you will be running way too much line out. I would go with a 2 oz minimum, maybe even 3. If you want to run shad raps, I would run a snap weight 30 feet in front of the bait or a a rubber core sinker about 5 feet in front of the bait.

If you think you really need to go with a #5 rap, I agree with Kooty and would use a snap weight versus a bottom bouncer. Using bottom bouncers may spook fish before they even see your crankbait since you have to tie it on so close to your bottom bouncer (short snell).

I would place that snap weight 50 feet in front of your crankbait so you will assure it will not spook fish.

Tie on your crankbait, then add 1-1.5 oz. snap weight 50 feet from your crankbait and then let out 50 more feet of line (100 feet total). This should get you down to 20 feet or so trolling at 2.0 m.p.h.

Snap weights, vary size and speed until you get the correct depth.

I have used a 3 oz bell sinker on a 3 way swivel with about 3-4′ of drop line to the weight and an 6′-8′ leader to the lure. It is cumbersome, but it works w/ #5 (even shallow runners) for deeper depths and lets you fish without a lot of line out.

It is helpful of you are cranking sharp breaks/structure (not unlike the points on the Croix ).
