The time and weather finally came together to make fishing worth while again. After spending several days this spring trying to locate any fish in cold, crowded conditions, we had a sunny day where we actually took off gloves and jackets. I was fishing with my friend Jake who admitted to being a river rookie who had never caught a walleye with a jig. He learned a lot today and got to visit Everets for the first time and saw all the pool 4 legends on the river fishing. Dean, Dustin and James were all on the river. Jake said it was like being in Hollywood and seeing the stars all in one day.
We started before sunrise and found a current seam and began pitching jigs with ring worms. We went with colors that Dean had recommended just a couple days before. He had them sitting on the counter and recommended we go ahead and give these colors a try, Thanks Dean. I was able to boat the first and only pre-spawn walleye of the day that morning, she was 27″ and weighed in at 10.5 lbs. Things really slowed down mid day so we moved around but it seemed to be tough afternoon bite.
The evening bite started with Jake taking his first jigging walleye on the river and a big smile. It was well deserved after all the jigs he lost that morning. About the time a lot of boats were heading in I landed the second walleye over 10 lbs, this gal was post-spawn at 29″. I don’t know how long these big fish will hang around, but if you get time I recommend hitting the current seams where you are all alone and being very patient. We only caught seven walleyes all day five eaters and the two pictured. In case you were wondering we took a bunch of pictures and let both fish swim away.
