i was thinking of buying a couple planer boards to do a little trolling this summer. but the thing is that i havent done hardly any trolling before. but i figure i should try and figure it out sometime. i would probably be trolling on lake koshkonog and maybe some flowages up north. i dont really have any trolling rods either. i was just thiking of using some of the baitcasting rods that i have around. would that work fine or should i buy a couple trolling rods and what rods/reels to buy also? not looking to spend a lot of money on it either. thanks for any advice

throw some 10lb mono or fireline on those rods so that you can go off of the trollers bible also get yourself some offshore tackle planer boards model (OR12 left and right) and you’ll be setup

There isn’t any reason you couldn’t start doing some trolling with the equipment you have now. If you find that trolling is a good fit for you and you put some fish in the boat then you may want to invest a little money on some better trolling rods and some linecounter reels. I just saw that some of the new Fire Line Braided is color segmented. I think it changes color every five feet to help keep track of how much line you have out. You could respool a baitcaster or two with this line and get yourself a Precision Trolling book and in no time you can get dialed in on some good fish.

Ben the new Fireline changes color every 30″ so 2 colors would be 5 feet

Thanks, that’s good to know. That can help someone new to trolling really get dialed in.

I would recommend getting atleast some linecounter reels. The counting colors is an option, but thats a lot of colors to count and you will lose track in the 100 ft. plus you will need to let out. Its important to know the depth your lures are at, especially with a planer board.

In summary, I would buy the linecounter reels first and then the planer boards.

If you only troll Koshkonong, you can probably start with the colored line if you don’t want to spend money right away on line counters. Kosh is only 7 feet deep or so, which means you will be running your baits pretty close behind the boards. If you plan to do a lot of fishing elsewhere, get the line counters. You won’t be sorry.
