First I apologize for the informal report with NO PICS… My boat remains at Everts and so does my camera… ( I think senility has set in!)
Yes the bite was still tough…mostly due to sub 40 water temps (until Wed) but expect up coming days to improve as the water temps rise and levels fall slowly.
Snow and winds were brutal on Sun/Mon…we met Ben Garver and Wade Kuehl on the water and they kindly passed on that there was a fair “dragging bite” going on.
Basically, Dragging is slowly pulling a jig/plastic along a current break, contour, shoreline or transition feature. This is generally done with an electric motor, and the jig held at an angle so that it is barely scraping bottom, about a cast behind the boat.
Once we got the hang of it the action was vastly improved and I found it to be a very effective method (Thanks to you too Jason Halfen!)
Dean Marshall offered an Extreme 70MLF to test drive and that was an excellent tool for dragging…a 7’6″ MLXF may be even better!
By Wednesday the water temps inched above 41 degrees and we started to catch some nice fat Sauger up to 21-22″ and a few 20-21″ Walleyes. There were plenty “eater” Sauger to take back home and we (as always) had a great time.
The best plastics for us were mini paddle tails, shortened ringworms and P-tails. I had good luck pitching with Everts 3/16oz and BFT jigs (Chart and Firetiger) and I Dragged
Nuckleball 1/8 and 1/4oz jigs in Orange/Yellow and Red Metallic. Best Plastic colors were GoldCracker Chart tail P-tails and Silver Blue core and Firecracker Chart tail Ringies.
I am more impressed with 6# Cortland Endurance Mono…especially in cold temps. It stayed soft and supple below freezing…
I will post pics ASAP and will return to Everts next week. I think the bite will really start to heat up soon!
See you on the water!
