Im headed to the cabin today to pick up my little 14 ft. lund. In the next few weeks I will be headed to red wing. I have only fished there twice. Where should i start? The dam, the Y, tepee? I have read 3 waying with a crankbait is a good start. Or should i just keep it simple a use a jig minnow? I know of 3 wing dams up by the dam on the left side. Are those the only ones i need to look out for?

Those are all good spots to try. Keep your eye on the Mississippi-Walleye forum here and you’ll know what’s happening down there. Reports might be slow this week with the tournament coming up Saturday, but after that you should get plenty of help here.

Don’t forget the plastics bite, pitching or dragging. Jig and minnow is the old standby.

I would also recommend checking with Dean the day you go out. The conditions of the river as well as the locations of the fish change soooo fast this time or year. You can’t beat info from the guy that talks to people day in and day out! That being said, I would recommend to keep it simple. I see this is only your second time to the river. The absolute #1 piece of advice is not what color, type, size or shape of bait to use, but to have boat control down! This is the hardest part of river fishing. I would stick with a jig/minnow, or jig and plastic setup and work the area below the Y or up near the dam on the WI side. Those two areas allow you to get a nice long drift and concentrate on boat control (as well as being some great vertical jigging spots!). I would check with Dean on depths, but the vertical day bite should be in the upper teens to upper twenties. Long story short, don’t try to do 5 different techniques in a day. Pick 1, maybe 2 and stick to them. Good boat control in the right areas will catch fish with just about any method you choose this time of year. The only other wingdam to really be concerned with is at the mouth of the vermillion river. Not sure on water levels, but this one can be tricky at times. Good Luck.

A lot of changes in river conditions potentially, 2 weeks from now.All of the locations mentioned, plus others will be good starting points.I might also suggest, you consider posting an open seat available in the trip swap forum. There are many experienced anglers willing to share their expertise on the river, and you might really enjoy meeting and fishing with them.Just a thought.
