First I’d like to say hi.This is my first time to your site and I’ve kind of read through some of the forums and it good to see a site where people talk about fishing instead of whos equipment is better. But my main reason for this post is for some advice for fishing pool 4 right now. I’m heading there for my first time. I’m not looking for anyones hot spots just a friendly shove in the right direction.

    Welcome to Ido Big Country!

    Hail from Montana?

I’m not a walleye fisherperson, but hang around a few…they have to have friends too.

The best advice I could give you is to stop in at Everts http://www.EvertsFishingResort.com . Check in with Dean, he has the latest info on the bite…and it does change…sometimes from day to day.

I’ll let the experts give you the rest of the info.

Are you mainly a jigging, pitching or trolling kind a guy?

    Welcome to IDO!

You can shorten your learning curve by stopping in to Evert’s Resort, and ask Dean to set you up with the latest Hot item of the week! You can easily go up the the dam area, and fish right down the middle of the river in depths between 20 and 30 feet. Hover jigs with Ring Worms, Super Doos, or minnows on them.

Also try the confluence of the lock side and dam side commonly referred to as the “Y”. Jigging down the channel there will also get you into fish, and you will probably meet some darned nice folks in doing so!

    Welcome aboard!

First of all, thanks for joining us as iDofishing….we hope that you will make us your internet angling home.

Now, about Pool 4. With the first tournament of the season next weekend, you may not get a ton of “spot-on” advice, but let me give you some general pointers.

First and last light are very good now as the water is very clear. Expect that to start changing this week as last week’s snow melts with the predicted warming air temps.

There are unbelievable numbers of fish between Everts resort and the dam right now. I know because I’ve seen them using the Marcum line of cameras. The fish are there!

The deep water below the “y” is a community hole that will fill up with vertical jiggers as the day wears on. You’ll also find a bunch of guys in the water immediately below the roller dam. Try to avoid water deeper than 30′, as the fish (which are smaller ones, as a rule) have poor survival rates after release.

The channel between the Y and the roller dam has 3 wing dams along the left hand shore (heading upstream). The dam closest to the Y is out of the water (well, at least it is now). The tip of the second dam is marked with a green buoy. Don’t drive over a wingdam…it’ll ruin your day.

The most common presentation right now is to vertical jig. Minnows give guys confidence but plastics will produce larger fish, on average. You will also see guys dragging ringworms upstream and down, pitching ringies, pitching blades, and even a few pulling cranks on 3-ways. Stop in to the baitshop at Everts Resort for some great, timely advice on which presentations are working, and to stock up on the plastics and jigs you’ll need. Dean is a treasure-trove of advice….just do what he says, and you’ll be good to go.

I do alot of trolling. thought I’d maybe drag some three ways through some holes. If I can find some with fish in them.
I’m actually from northern minnesota.Just some dumb nickname my buddies call me.It was either big country or the nickname my wife has for me but I didn’t want to get booted on my first day.

    Big Country,

Great advise from Jason and Tuck. All I can add is, you can do a Search of the pool 4 section from last year and earlier, all through March. a lot of the same techniques work year in year out.

Also do a Search for Dustin Stewart, he has guided on pool 4 for many years, he sure can shorten the learning curve, and is also very fun to share a boat with.

    Good Luck,

    and again,

    Welcome to IDO….

We are seeing the rapala 3 way bite just starting to show some signs of life. Smaller profile #7 have been working for the few folks that have tried.Once we get a bit more color and water temp, this presentation will be a “go to” for several boats. When you come down,I would suggest being prepared to do both rigging and jigging.Day to day patterns have been up and down just like our weather.

Hey Big Country. If you can get your hands on a copy of latest Walleye Insider magazine with John Thelen on the cover on page 18 there is a really good article on this section of the river and the tracking of spring walleyes. It might change some of the areas you will plan on fishing but yes there are fish in the areas mentioned by others. Good luck.

No need to run out and buy a magazine. We have the full technical report available right here on iDofishing:

    Great stuff!

If you are a busy person the magazine is worth every penny to get a summary of this article. Indeed good stuff.

I agree the Arrticle has some real good points to help out. I know I jotted down a few points.
