I’ve been reading some walleye books that say to use like 6 pound line with a lighter jig head like 1/16 or 1/8. I’ve also read in some posts that people are using 6 pound also. i was wondering does it make a difference if you use 6 or 8 pound test. i have all my walleye rods rigged with 8 pound.

Guess it depends on how and where you are fishing. I like 8#. Where Im fishing it is a ton of snaggs and 8# helps get a few more jigs back to the boat. 8# is what Im used to fishing so I stick with it.

Are you using hard line or mono? Are you pitching, dragging, or vertical jigging. In most applications I don’t think it makes that much of a difference. I know when i am dragging upstream I like the smallest diameter hard line I can get away with.

My personal preference is 6 lb test in Kentucky, unless I am fishing areas where there is a lot of timber or weeds than I may reluctantly go to 8 lb test. If I fish lake Erie and the heavy reefs I will go to fire line with a floro-carbon leader in the 8 lb test range.

For fishing P-4 or the Great Lakes I use 6# mono and Braid for drifting, pitching or dragging jigs and small blades. I use 8# braid for vertical jigging bigger blades. But these are not heavy wood or weed areas.
Most of the time I am pitching 3/16oz jigs on P-4…sometimes 1/8 and once in a while 1/4oz. I found my hook up rate doubled when I started using lighter line and jigs. Boat control will allow you to do this and recoginzing current seams and breaks.

I have landed several big Walleye, Cats, and even a 70+lb Sturgeon on 6# mono in the Rivers…just be patient…

I use both 6 and 8. Depends on what technique I am using at the time.

    4# , 6# & 8# depending on stage ,flow,and jig weight.Line size can be a difference maker.

I’m giving Sufix Elite HI VIS 6 and 8 a try this year on spin cast. Trolling I’m going with Power Pro HI VIS 20# with 6# diameter.
