I am new to river fishing eyes and I would like to know what is a good water temp to start fishing the run. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

March 11th and April 9th are the full moons … so the run should start closer to the March Moon although the biggest day or actually night may be the 9th of April. The days will be real long by then so the peak days/nights might even be on the new moon. If the temps are 40-45 there should be large numbers of fish in spawning areas second week of March.

The ice went out almost three weeks earlier than average this years so that also makes me think we should be expecting the solid start of the run on the March full moon. Some of the females are already in place, because the redhorse are holding in spawning areas already, even though not a lot of large females are being caught yet.

Redhorse in case you haven’t heard are walleye egg lovers, and I usually only catch them in big numbers during the walleye spawn or in walleye spawn areas just before, during and after the spawn.

First off welcome to IDO I usually start to see an increase in activity when the temp hits the low 40’s. There are plenty of other factors to consider for the best time, like flow, stage, and clarity. But generally when the water temp hits the low 40’s its getting pretty close to being prime time.

when the water temps hit 38-39, i start making my way to the spawning grounds….i will catch mostly males at that point, and they will be agressive but plenty of 15-17″ eaters. once the water hits about 40-42 degrees, the females come in and then its on.

New moon between mid March & April and water temps generally in the upper 30’s triggers the crank bait bite. Low to mid 40’s and they are spawning
