you know everyone likes leeches for walleye during the summer, but what about early spring when the water is still cold. do walleyes like them, and what about ice fishing, I know they are hard to find, but will walleyes eat them?

They would curl up so bad in cold water they would be hard to use. They are dormant in the winter for a reason.

that makes sense, what about night crawlers, do walleye eat them in the winter too, or is it not natural for them.

Maybe but they might be a little hard to dig up this time of year I have been tempted to throw one of those gulp leeches down the hole to see what happens.Ya just never know unless you try.

I actually tried leeches once in the winter. I saved them in the fall for that purpose. And boy do they curl up tight.

As far as the gulp leeches, I tried them last winter season and a little this winter. Never caught a thing on them, but it wasn’t a scientific test by any means.

Leeches will curl up. Night crawlers might work but I stick with all minnows in the cold water.

6-7 years ago ten of us were fishing LOTW out of Sportsman’s Lodge in late Jan. I had night crawlers in my fridge from summer and snuck them along in my backpack without the other guys knowing it. On ice we had the hot shack and were catching quite a few walleye and sauger. I tried the crawlers but they didn’t do much compared to minnows. We were talking on the radios between shacks and everyone wanted to know what our secret bait was. Finally one of the guys walked the couple hundred yards between shacks and I showed him the crawlers. I gave him a handful and said don’t let these die and he put in his coat and walked back. We never laughed so hard.
