Jighead colors

I was just reading the “Favorite ringworm colors” post. How important is the color of the lead that goes with those tails? Also, how many of you guys like to use the plain lead “color”? I would think it could match nicely with colors like the “oystershell” or “Stewards pro blue”?

I use quite a few unpainted and black heads at this time of year.

Add a little stain and I start to add a bit of color.

When fishing bait in the summer, I tend to spend a bit more time thinking about and refining my colors.

I use unpainted heads quite a bit and they are effective, especially in clear water… but after many years of tossing lead for Walleyes there are definitely days they favor colors…

My favorites are Lime, Purple, Black and Charteuse.

The water here on Lake Wisconsin is a bit more stained than the upper pools of the Mississippi river. I would have to agree with Jason that in cases like this, jighead color does become more important. Over the last couple of years, I’ve become pretty picky about which color jigs & plastic tails I match together.
More often than not, if I’m going to pick a neutral color, I’ll go with black rather than plain lead. My guess is that the plain lead would work just fine in most of these situations but I can’t really say for sure. More testing will have to be done I guess.

Sour Apple, Purple/pearl and High gloss black in that order.

Since I seldom fish eyes I had to go look what was rigged up from fishing two years ago.

Thanks. I bought a nice selection of BFN H2O jigs and was wondering how you would rate them for fishing with fatheads? I’ve already heard they work great with plastics but I’m not finding much about using them with just minnows. Any thoughts on that?

These jigs work well with minnows and crawlers. When i fish minnows on them i just cast them out and drag them back to the boat across the river bottom. I only do this when fishing sand, trying to drag thru rock doesn’t work so well .

Plain lead is a great color in cleaner water. As Jason mentioned, once we see some run off in the system colored heads do produce better in most instances.

B-fish-N tackle precision heads are terrific with fatheads, shiners, even an undersized sucker. The key is the oversized hook, which can accommodate a good size bait yet still have enough “bite” to drive the point home into a hungry eye’s mouth. I use 1/16 oz precision heads for pitching minnows early (May – mid June) and late (Mid sept-Nov 1) in the season, and of course during the winter doldrums that we’re currently locked in. From June-Sept, they go great with a half crawler or leech when dragging in relatively snag-free areas.

    One word….

    Fantastic!

Again, I know nothing about walleye fishing…but why would you want to put your hand in cold water or on a wet minnow when a dry plastic would (most of the time) work just as good or not better?

I know there are some that just can’t grasp the thought that eye’s/sauger would ever bite on a piece of plastic…but MAN OH MAN the first time I used the H2o’s with a Ringworm, that little 15 inch eye CEE-LAMMED that bait. I’ll never forget that fish.

    Thank you Mr. Holst!

Here’s a good read from Chris Granrud on using the Precision Heads with minnows up on Rainy:

Has anyone noticed a difference between brighter new lead and duller old head jigs when fishing plain lead heads?
A couple times I have, it amazed me, just wondering if someone experienced the same thing.

Absolutely, Get clear Hi – Gloss powder paint and coat your plain lead heads a.s.a.p. after they come from the mold. I prefer black hi-gloss with a two dimensional eyes……..”Hairjig”
