I have never fished in a river other than running limb lines on the Marais Des Cygnes River which is really more like a large stream. I am planning to go up to either Atchison, Kansas or St Joseph, Missouri to fish on the Missouri river for sauger. I plan to fish wing dams and inside bends and if I go to St Joseph there is an oxbow called Browning Lake. Anyway I am very comfortable vertical jigging and I know I can do that on the down stream side of the wing dams. But what technique or approach would be the best on the upstream side? I have read posts about people pitching. What is pitching is it more than just casting?
